Data Examining the Effects of Fire Timing and Snow Depth on Plant Emergence Phenology Growth and Flowering in a Restored Tallgrass Prairie in Wisconsin from 2016–2023

This dataset includes data from a study testing the interacting effects of disturbance regime and winter snow depth on plant emergence, growth, and reproductive effort in a restored tallgrass prairie. The “Treatments.csv” file includes details of the experimental design. The design includes two snow manipulation treatments (ambient or reduced snow) nested within one of three disturbance treatments (annual spring burn, annual fall burn, or unburned control). Treatments were replicated eight times in a randomized block design. Disturbance treatments were applied annually, and snow manipulations were conducted after any snowfall exceeding 10 cm, from 2016 through 2023. Disturbance treatments were conducted at the plot level, and snow treatments were conducted at the subplot level nested within each plot. The “Litter.csv” file contains average litter depth measurements for each experimental subplot, which were calculated by averaging litter depth at the four corners of a 1 m2 quadrat placed in each subplot. The “Temperature.csv” file includes soil temperature just below the soil surface in each subplot. Temperature was recorded every 2 hours from November through June. The “Cover.csv” file includes the visually estimated percent vegetative and reproductive cover of each species in each 1 m2 subplot, which was collected during each week of sampling. The “Emergence.csv” file includes the week that each individual emerged above the soil surface. The “Growth.csv” file details the height and diameter of each individual plant in each week of sampling. The “Flowering.csv” file includes the total number of ramets and the number of ramets that had flowers or seeds for each individual plant at the end of the growing season.
