The USGS Science Data Catalog

  • Serves as the official public inventory of USGS data as required by the White House Office of Science Technology and Policy (OSTP), the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and the Foundations for Evidence-based Policymaking Act of 2018
  • Is the authoritative inventory of USGS data under the USGS Public Access Plan (2023)
  • Consolidates metadata describing all USGS data and provides that inventory to the Department of the Interior's Enterprise Data Inventory (EDI) system, and to data.gov and GeoPlatform
  • Provides a search and discovery tool that allows public discovery of and access to USGS data
  • Promotes USGS adherence to internationally established FAIR principles and the USGS Data Lifecycle Model to ensure data are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable

The Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018 includes the requirement that agencies designate a Chief Data Officer, Evaluation Officer, and Statistical Official to lead activities required by, and resulting from, the Act, including priorities for managing data as a strategic asset. As a bureau within the Department of the Interior (DOI), USGS is represented by the following DOI officials:

  • DOI Statistical Officer: Jacob Malcom
