This coverage contains bathymetric contours for Aleutian Basin and Bowers Basin east of the 1867 Convention Line in the southwestern Bering Sea. Geographic extent of this file is: 51.7 : 62.0 N / -165.1 W : 170.0 E. Bathymetric contours range from 50 m to 6400 m. This coverage was used to display the bathymetry for the Atlas of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, Bering Sea, U.S. Geological Survey Misc. Investigations Series I-2053, 1991 (also known as the GLORIA survey). The map was published separately by Hall and others, 1989, U.S. Geological Survey Open-file Report 89-548.
      <purpose>To provide high quality bathymetric contours of the Aleutian and Bowers Basins for marine mammal and sea bird research.</purpose>
      <supplinf>The USGS Alaska Science Center created this and other digital bathymetry coverages to support marine animal research in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. The completed coverages are being stored on the Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System (CMGDS) for archival purposes only. The coverage "Bathymetry of the Aleutian and Bowers Basins, Bering Sea" is titled ALEUTBAS_2GEO (aleutbas=aleutian basin, 2=geometry only; geo=geographic projection)</supplinf>

      <procstep>
        <procdesc>Original bathymetric data were collected during the EEZ-SCAN surveys in 1986-87 w/ a 10kHz high-resolution bottom profiler. Prior to the EEZ-SCAN cruises, bathymetric maps were prepared from existing data sets. The digitized bathymetry from the published and unpublished maps were plotted on a common base and the uncorrected 10kHz water depth values from the EEZ-SCAN surveys were overlayed on this base. Because of the high quality of the data, the digital data from the EEZ-SCAN cruises were weighted more than the previously published maps when repositioning contour lines (from Hall et al. 1989). The resulting bathymetry coverage was converted to Arc/INFO from a Navplot polygon file by Florence Wong in July 1995.</procdesc>
