This dataset consists of one table containing whole-rock geochemistry data for 753 igneous and metamorphic rocks from the Yukon-Tanana upland of eastern interior Alaska, collected between 2013 and 2019. All materials were analyzed by ALS Global, between 2014 and 2020, by a range of different techniques, so multiple unique entries for a given element relate to different analytical methods or preparations, as detailed in accompanying metadata.
<purpose>This data setwas developed from samples collected during geological mapping and research conducted from 2013 to 2019, including a mix of surficial and drill-core material. The geochemical data from igneous and metamorphic rock samples aid in the interpretation of possible tectonic environment, melting sources, and crystallization history. These data contribute to understanding the geologic history of the Alaska Range.</purpose>
<supplinf>Sample collection was funded by the Mineral Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. All materials were analyzed by ALS Global between 2014 and 2020.</supplinf>

<procdesc>Methods used for sample preparation of geochemistry analyses by ALS between 2014 and 2020. Prior to crushing, samples for whole-rock analysis were trimmed by USGS staff to remove weathering or heterogeneities, and cut surfaces were lapped to remove any saw metal. Sample material is crushed to >70% passing 2 mm, and a 250 g split is then pulverized in low-chrome steel grinding mills to >85% passing 75 microns, with barren material passing through pulverizers between each sample. Approximately 3-5g aliquots of USGS standard reference materials (AGV2 - andesite, BHVO2 – basalt, DNC1 - dolerite, DTS2b - dunite, GSP2 - granodiorite, QLO1 - quartz latite, W-2 - diabase), plus two internal standards (12AJJ39E, 12AJJ46A) were submitted as unknown samples to monitor accuracy, and replicates of seven of these (AGV2, BHVO2, DNC1, GSP2, and W2, plus the two internal standards) were run in different sessions to monitor laboratory reproducibility. 'Field_Name' in file "geochemistry_igneousMetamorphic_dataDictionary_yukonTanana_2022_todd.csv" provides element (or element oxide), unit (% versus ppm/ppb), and a subscript composite indicating the analytical method. The method subscript begins with "ME_" and is followed by a method code, which refers to analytical packages, each with varying decomposition and analytical techniques, and are described as subsequent Process Steps.</procdesc>

<procdesc>"OA_GRA05x" – The total oxide content is determined from the XRF analyte concentrations and loss on Ignition (L.O.I.) values. A prepared sample (1.0 g) is placed in an oven at 1000°C for one hour, cooled and then weighed. The percent loss on ignition is calculated from the difference in weight.</procdesc>

<procdesc>"ICP06" – A prepared sample (0.200 g) is added to lithium metaborate/lithium tetraborate (LiBO2 /Li2B4O7) flux (0.90 g), mixed well and fused in a furnace at 1000°C. The resulting melt is then cooled and dissolved in 100 mL of 4% nitric acid/2% hydrochloric acid. This solution is then analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and the results are corrected for spectral inter-element interferences. Oxide concentration is calculated from the determined elemental concentration and the result is reported in that format.</procdesc>

Sample identifiers for established standard reference materials are also noted; these may be repeated over multiple analyses as a check for accuracy and reference for laboratory reproducibility. Core sample names generally include a one or two letter code for site, the last 2 digits of the year drilled, and down-hole core depth interval, although formatting and depth units vary from site to site. <attrlabl>Unit</attrlabl>
<attrdef>Tentative geological map unit inferred for each sample, using the simplified map units from Wilson et al. (2015). These unit designations are provided for informational purposes only, to aid in the interpretation of these data. In some cases, sample units are inconsistent with map unit at their location. In these instances, the unit designation is based on a combination of the field interpretations made by individual researchers during new mapping and collection of these samples, and the availability of new UPb ages (Todd et al., 2019; Jones and O'Sullivan, 2020; Todd and Kylander-Clark, 2022; Holm-Denoma et al., 2022). Units listed here are the Map unit labels from Wilson et al. (2015), with some exceptions. First, we do not make a distinction between KJgu and Kmgr, presuming all samples within either are mid-Cretaceous, and are all labeled here as Kmgr. Second, new unit codes are added here, one each for Permain and early Tertiary plutons (Pmg, Tp, respectively). Neither Permian nor a locally appropriate Tertiary plutonic units are described in the referenced map, and the only local early Tertiary unit is volcanic (Tv). And third, several plutonic igneous samples included here are located with unit TKpr, a mapped late-Cretaceous pyroclastic unit in Wilson et al. (2015), so we apply the less-common TKgi (intrusive) unit label to these.</attrdef>
