The USGS, in cooperation with the City of Summerset, South Dakota,
developed a Soil-Water Balance (SWB) model of the alluvial aquifer in north
Summerset to estimate recharge and potential evapotranspiration volumes
and rates for 2017-2019. The model area included the north part of the city
of Summerset in west South Dakota along the east range of the Black Hills.
The SWB model output can be used for groundwater flow models, water
budget calculations, and to study the effects of precipitation variations on
groundwater levels. The output for the model was used to estimate recharge
and potential evapotranspiration for budget calculations. The model is
uncalibrated but the output could be calibrated as an input for another model,
such as a groundwater flow model.

This USGS data release contains all of the input and output files for the model
described in the associated model documentation report
(https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20205097).
<purpose>The purpose of the Soil-Water Balance model and its intended uses include
estimating recharge and potential evapotranspiration volumes and rates for
2017-2019 for potential use in a groundwater flow model.

The development of model input and output files included in this data release
are documented in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report
2020-5097 (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20205097).</purpose>
<supplinf>Support is provided for correcting errors in the data release and clarification of
the modeling conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. Users are encouraged
to review the model documentation report to understand the purpose, construction,
and limitations of this model (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20205097). The model
runs successfully only if the original directory structure is correctly restored. The
model archive is divided into several parts to reduce the likelihood of download
timeouts. Instructions for reconstructing the original directory structure and running
the model included in this data release and can be found in the readme.txt ASCII
file which can be downloaded as part of this data release.</supplinf>
