This dataset contains geospatial data compiled and generated to support supervised land cover classification and habitat monitoring across nine Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Alabama. The dataset integrates Landsat 9 surface reflectance imagery acquired between May and July 2024, the 2021 National Land Cover Database (NLCD), NLCD-derived Tree Canopy Cover (TCC), a stacked predictor raster, and field-collected training and validation data.
Landsat imagery was used to derive spectral bands, vegetation indices, and texture metrics that were combined into a multiband predictor raster stack used as input to a machine learning classification model. The NLCD and TCC layers were incorporated as additional environmental predictors and for comparison with model outputs. Field data were collected within WMAs to provide labeled training and independent validation samples representing major land cover classes. All raster datasets were reprojected to a common coordinate system, resampled to a consistent spatial resolution, and spatially aligned prior to stacking. The predictor stack represents the final set of variables used in model training and prediction. Wildlife Management Area boundary shapefiles were used to define the spatial extent of all analyses. This dataset supports reproducible land cover classification workflows and landscape-scale ecological analysis across protected lands in Alabama.
<purpose>The purpose of this dataset is to provide a complete and spatially consistent set of remote sensing, environmental, and field reference data for developing and evaluating supervised land cover classification models within Alabama’s Wildlife Management Areas. The dataset was assembled to support machine learning–based mapping of habitat conditions and to evaluate the utility of satellite-derived predictors as an alternative to traditional field-based monitoring in adaptive management programs.</purpose>

<attraccr>Attribute accuracy varies among dataset components and reflects the original production and validation methods of each source. Landsat surface reflectance imagery was obtained from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Collection 2 Tier 1 products and represents atmospherically corrected reflectance values derived using standardized processing algorithms. NLCD 2021 land cover and tree canopy cover layers were produced and validated by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium using nationally consistent classification procedures and accuracy assessment protocols.

The stacked predictor raster was generated by combining spectral bands, derived vegetation indices, and ancillary layers using validated mathematical formulas. Field-collected training and validation data were recorded using handheld GPS units and classified in situ based on observed vegetation structure and land use. Attribute values in the training dataset represent direct field observations and were reviewed for consistency prior to model training. No attribute values from source datasets were altered beyond standard reprojection and stacking processes.</attraccr>
</attracc>
<logic>All spatial datasets were evaluated to ensure both internal consistency and alignment across layers. Raster datasets were checked for consistent cell size, coordinate reference system, and pixel alignment prior to stacking. Predictor rasters were verified to ensure that derived indices were calculated correctly and that no invalid or out-of-range values were introduced during processing.</logic>
<complete>The dataset includes all spatial layers required to replicate the land cover classification workflow within the defined study area. Landsat imagery was selected to provide complete coverage of the nine Wildlife Management Areas with minimal cloud contamination. Predictor raster stacks include all bands and derived indices used in model training, and no predictor layers were omitted from the final stack. Field training and validation data include representative samples of major land cover classes observed within the study area at the time of collection. No known spatial gaps exist within the raster datasets after clipping to the WMA boundaries, and missing data values are retained only in areas affected by cloud cover or sensor limitations.</complete>

<procdesc>Landsat 9 Collection 2 Surface Reflectance Tier 1 imagery was accessed through Google Earth Engine (GEE), filtered for <10% cloud cover, and exported as GeoTIFF files for the study area covering Wildlife Management Areas in Alabama. The imagery, acquired between 202405 and 202407, was composited in GEE using the median of available cloud-free pixels. After export, all raster bands were imported into R, where spectral indices including NDVI, SAVI, and EVI were calculated using raster-based band math. Processed layers were stacked, rescaled to a 0–1 range, and reprojected to NAD 1983 UTM Zone 16N for use in supervised land cover classification.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Field data were collected during the summer of 2024 across selected Wildlife Management Areas in Alabama. Observers recorded dominant land cover types, vegetation characteristics, and site conditions using handheld GPS units and field data sheets. Based on these field observations, training and validation polygons were manually digitized in Google Earth using high-resolution satellite imagery to delineate homogeneous land cover patches. The digitized files were then imported into ArcGIS Pro, where they were converted to polygon shapefiles and attributed with land cover class labels consistent with field observations. Topological rules were applied in ArcGIS to ensure spatial integrity. Attribute values were reviewed for consistency and correctness. Final shapefiles were exported and used in the supervised classification model for land cover mapping.</procdesc>
