    <descript>
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program, cataloged and scanned notes and calculations for indirect measurements taken during flood events in Montana. This product provides a publicly available catalog of the field notes, photos, survey information, and calculations for indirect measurements at selected sites. Indirect measurements are surveyed by the USGS after floods by identifying high water marks along rivers indicating the maximum stream stage. These high water marks are used to estimate the peak streamflow through standardized methods. Estimates of peak streamflow from the indirect measurements were added to the Water Data for the Nation (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis). The estimates from the measurements can be used to calculate peak-flow frequencies, inform floodplain management, or add additional information to flood databases.
      <purpose>The purpose of the data are to provide public access to the indirect measurements taken by the U.S. Geological Survey in Montana. Estimates of peak streamflow from the indirect measurements were added and updated in the USGS Water Data for the Nation. The scanned notes and calculations are included in an indirect measurement catalog that includes folders by site name. These folders provide details on the measurements.</purpose>

      <procstep>
        <procdesc>Peak streamflow estimates from the indirect measurements are contained in this database after large flood events in Montana at specific sites. These measurements were estimated using established methods such as culvert-flow, slope-area, and flow-over-road depending on the site access and hydraulic conditions. Peak gage-height data and surveys of channel cross sections were used to estimate the peak flows in the NWIS database (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis).

The file database was created by scanning indirect measurement files and converting them into a portable document format (PDF). Blank pages and pages without information were removed to improve readability.

Summary spreadsheets were created to provide streamflow values for most indirect measurements and associated site information, organized by the calendar year. Some sites did not have enough location information in the file to determine a location for the measurement and those sites were not added to the NWIS database.</procdesc>
