LANDFIRE's (LF) 2001 Existing Vegetation Type (EVT) product represents the current distribution of the terrestrial ecological systems classification developed by NatureServe for the western hemisphere. In this context, a terrestrial ecological system is defined as a group of plant community types that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients. See the EVT product page (https://landfire.gov/vegetation/evt) for more information about ecological systems and NVC classifications.

EVT is mapped using decision tree models, field data, Landsat imagery, topography, and biophysical gradient data. Decision tree models are developed separately for tree, shrub, and herbaceous lifeforms which are then used to produce a lifeform specific EVT product. These models are generated for each Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Level III Ecoregion (https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/ecoregions). Riparian, alpine, sparse, and other site-specific EVTs are constrained by predetermined masks.

The final EVT and Environmental Site Potential (ESP) products are compared and rectified through a series of QA/QC measures. Values of one or more of these data layers are adjusted based on a hierarchical decision tree ruleset to align the respective lifeforms and life-zone of each ESP and EVT category.
<purpose>The LANDFIRE (LF) 2001 (version 1.0.5) Refresh of the LF National Base Map is the foundational version of LANDFIRE. The initial data released by LANDFIRE, referred to as LANDFIRE (LF) National (version 1.0.0), was completed in the winter of 2010. LF 2001 released in 2011 and incorporated improvements as well as remodeled cover and height layers. LF 2001 also ensured wildland fires through 2001 were represented. When LF 2001 released, it superseded LF National as the revised base map.

LF 2001 products are designed to facilitate national and regional level strategic fire and resource management planning and reporting of management activities. The principal purposes of the products include providing: 1) national level landscape scale geospatial products to support fire and fuels management planning and 2) consistent fuels products to support fire planning, analysis, and budgeting to evaluate fire management alternatives.

Products are created at a 30-meter raster; however, the applicability of products varies by location and specific use. LF products were designed to support 1) national (all states) strategic planning, 2) regional (single large states or groups of smaller states), and 3) strategic/tactical planning for large sub regional landscapes and Fire Management Units (FMUs) (such as significant portions of states or multiple federal administrative entities). The applicability of LF products to support fire and land management planning on smaller areas will vary by product, location, and specific use. Managers and planners must evaluate LF products according to the scale and requirements specific to their needs.</purpose>
<supplinf>Four attributes are provided in which LANDFIRE EVTs have been cross-walked to existing vegetation classifications. These attributes are provided to help characterize and describe the LANDFIRE EVTs nationally in terms of these existing vegetation classifications but should not be used to create coarser, thematically simplified maps as they encompass a large amount of local variation. The Order, Class, and Subclass attributes are based on the Federal Geographic Data Committee - Vegetation Subcommittee's vegetation classification standard and pertain to upper physiognomic levels of the National Vegetation Classification System hierarchy. Order describes the dominant life forms (tree, shrub, dwarf shrub, herbaceous, or nonvascular) within the Vegetated Division of the hierarchy. Class describes the level in the classification hierarchy defined by the relative percent canopy cover of the tree, shrub, dwarf shrub, herb, and nonvascular life form in the uppermost strata during the peak of the growing season. Subclass describes the predominant leaf phenology of classes defined by tree, shrub, or dwarf shrub stratum (evergreen, deciduous, mixed evergreen-deciduous), and the average vegetation height for the herbaceous stratum (tall, medium, short). In addition to physiognomy, a cross-walk based more on the floristic composition of each EVT is provided using the combined classifications SAF and SRM for forested and rangeland types, respectively. LANDFIRE EVTs that do not apply to these pre-existing categories are cross-walked to coarser, LANDFIRE "cover classes".</supplinf>

<procdesc>LF 2001 ensures wildland fires from 1999 to 2001 are represented. Other improvements include resolving inconsistencies along international borders and updating certain aspects of key classes or areas, including: 1) riparian and wetlands areas, 2) labelling agricultural and urban vegetation class types as burnable, and 3) adjusting the extent of barren and water land cover types.

Reference resources utilized in LANDFIRE includes but is not limited to: Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program plot data, Landsat Dynamic Surface Water Extent (DSWE), the National Land Cover Database (NLCD), and National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
