The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled the Energy Geochemistry Database (EGDB), containing 3,619,149 analytical results for 111,791 samples collected by the Energy Resources Program (ERP) to develop an understanding of the physical and geochemical processes responsible for hydrocarbon formation. It also serves as a tool to assess oil and gas potential for sedimentary basins in both national and international settings (USGS Geochemistry Database, 2024). The EGDB is a compilation of inorganic and organic analytical data currently being captured in the ERP Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), historic databases, and data compiled from literature and unpublished public domain sources.

The EGDB is a relational database comprised of a Samples table and an Analysis table. The Samples table contains information pertaining to the location where the samples were collected and geologic information about the samples. The Analysis table contains records of analysis results from the analyses performed on the samples. Several predefined queries are included to assist with extracting data. The queries can be modified to fit user defined criteria.
<purpose>The EGDB is a compilation of data from historic and current databases to be used for energy resource assessments and research. This is part of the USGS effort to make all data publicly available.</purpose>
<supplinf>This database integrates historical analyses and newly generated analytical results. Sample and analyses records were selected based on the completion date of analyses, proprietary status, and submitter consent for data release. Contributors are provided a two-year period from the date of analysis completion to publish their data prior to inclusion in this system. This database is available in an Access database format and in a series of .csv files. This data release includes a data dictionary which provides definitions for the analyses, latitude/longitude (Lat/Lon) qualifiers, matrices, ranks, and descriptions for each field in the tables. Also provided is a Method_Procedures folder which contains previously unreleased methods. Within this folder, there is an Open File Report 02-389, which contains analytical methods used for the analysis of coal and coal combustion byproducts. The Gas Chromatography Methodology file, the GCMS_Methods file, and the Selected Methods of the Organic Geochemistry Laboratory file all contain methods which were used prior to 2013. Energy Geochemistry Laboratory (EGL) methods were established in 2013 and were in use until 2018. ERP-PGRL methods currently being followed are listed in the PGRL Method References file.

EGDB contains data records from the Athena and Pluto historical databases, Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center's (GGGSC) National Geochemical database (NGDB), and the Central Energy Resources Science Center’s Organic Geochemistry Database (OGDB). These systems were migrated into the ERP LIMS in 2007 to provide a centralized location for capturing analysis data generated by ERP laboratories. The following is a summary of each database that was migrated:

The Athena Geochemical database was maintained within the Mineral Resources Science Center's in-house Laboratory Information Management System (PLUTO/LIMS) from 1995-1997 (Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center, 2020) contained records with Laboratory IDs ranging from EA01-EC54 and sample IDs ranging from E000001-E004952. Sample types of coal, leachates, miscellaneous, rock, sediment, soil, water, blank, and standard were included in the data migrated to the ERP LIMS.

The archived Pluto Geochemical database maintained by the former Branches of Analytical Laboratories and Geochemistry from 1979-1995 (Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center, 2020) contained records with Laboratory IDs ranging from F384 – CK55 and sample IDs ranging from D122194 – W259104. Sample types of coal, coal combustion, organic fuel, and rock were included in the data migrated to the ERP LIMS.

The NGDB maintained by the GGGSC contained records for samples associated with the Energy Program. A subset of samples that were submitted by ERP personnel were migrated from the NGDB to the ERP LIMS in 2007. These records spanned several decades with multiple naming conventions for laboratory IDs and sample identification. The laboratory IDs of the migrated samples range from 12606-80245, AA89-WV82, I001-N695, MRP00631-MRP07718, and X0025-Z1082. Sample IDs range from C118874-C118936, D122194-D585158, LAS118-LDD965, M140272-M141786, W169814-W259104 with sample types of coal, leachate, miscellaneous, mudstone, peat, sandstone, siltstone, shale, and soil.

The OGDB contained chemical analysis data for crude oil, natural gas, coal, water, rock, and laboratory altered samples analyzed by the USGS Energy Resources Science Center’s Geochemistry Laboratory, or by contracted-service laboratories. Data were also obtained from the literature and unpublished public domain sources. Job Numbers (captured in the OrderID field) consist of a 2-digit year, followed by 3-digit sequential number for jobs submitted in that year. Job numbers (OrderIDs) beginning with 80 were reserved for rescued data and data captured from literature. Sample IDs consist of the job number followed by a 3-digit sequential number ranging from 001 to 999.

Starting in 2007, sample and analysis data have been captured in the ERP LIMS database. Data migrated from the above-mentioned databases were imported into the ERP LIMS. The Lab ID/Job Numbers and Sample ID formatting was preserved from the original databases. The ERP LIMS Job Numbers/Order IDs were formatted starting with the letter E followed by a 2-digit year, 2-digit month and a 2-digit sequential number for each batch of samples submitted during that month. Sample numbers consist of the job number followed by a dash and 3-digit sequential number for each sample.

The database structure is comprised of the following tables:
Samples – Contains information about each sample, including location, geology, geography, depths, etc.
Analysis – Contains details on analyses performed and their results. Numerous Analyses records are provided for most samples.
Lookup tables are included to describe in detail each attribute; refer to the entity and attribute overview section for further details.</supplinf>

<attraccr>Data compiled from historic databases and contracted-service laboratories have been reviewed for accuracy based on the information provided at the time it was imported into the current LIMS. Quality assurance and quality control (QAQC), sample collection, and documentation have varied over time. In many instances, latitude and longitude site location information for wells is derived from a USGS one-quarter mile grid system. Please note that because of the significant number of data sources, laboratory techniques, and reporting units included in this release, it is not possible for USGS to guarantee the precision or accuracy of any individual data point. Latitude and longitude values included from historic databases are as is and may not match other location information for a given sample.</attraccr>

<procdesc>Data review for accuracy: Records selected for inclusion in the EGDB were reviewed for accuracy of sampling location, result values, and comments. These samples were analyzed by multiple laboratories and span multiple decades with varying techniques and precision, which made quality checks difficult to perform with any precision. It was determined that the analysis name, technique, and results would be reported as documented in the original database. Analysis results were screened for minimum and maximum values to eliminate values outside the expected range of results. Latitude values were checked to ensure all values were between -90 and 90 degrees. Latitude values were checked to ensure all values were between -180 and 180 degrees.
Sampling location information was reviewed for errors, including latitude and longitude values that do not agree with country and state values. When a corrected sample location could be verified, based on additional information provided by the submitter, the corrected values were entered into the database. If a supposed corrected value could not be verified, the original values were not altered and were kept as provided. Result values were checked for minimum and maximum values that far exceeded the normal range of values for each parameter. Questionable data was referenced back to the original database for verification and the comments field was reviewed for additional information. Data values were only changed if there was a discrepancy between the original database value and the value exported from LIMS.</procdesc>
