This data release includes the revised downscaled climate inputs and hydrologic outputs from the Basin Characterization Model (BCM) version 8 (v8), described in Flint and others (2021a), in a 30 by 30-meter spatial resolution at a monthly time step from water years 1896 to 2024 for the upper Feather River watershed. This data release includes five child items: 1. 30-year summaries, 2. Model Archive, 3. Monthly BCM hydrology variables, 4. Monthly climate variables, and 5. Water year summaries.

VERSION HISTORY:
Revised: February 27, 2026; Data release corrected to fix error in the original model parameters.
First posted: March 25, 2025 at https://doi.org/10.5066/P1QA5FLG (deprecated data release)
      <purpose>REVISED: The Basin Characterization Model was run to produce fine-scale gridded estimates of actual evapotranspiration, soil moisture, recharge, runoff, and other water balance components. These are natural estimates of the water balance components and do not reflect anthropogenic factors like irrigation, diversions, and other water management decisions.</purpose>

    <overview>
      <eaover>REVISED: The original data release was withdrawn due to an error in the model parameters.

Downscaled climate inputs and hydrologic outputs in this data release are separated into five child items:

1. 30-year summaries: water year files that include average (aves) and standard deviation (stdev) for each of two 30-year periods, 1981-2010 and 1991-2020, and zipped by each of ten climate and hydrology variables: minimum temperature (tmn), maximum temperature (tmx), soil storage (str), runoff (run), recharge (rch), precipitation (ppt), potential evapotranspiration (pet), snowpack (pck), climatic water deficit (cwd), and actual evapotranspiration (aet), resulting in a total of 20 zipped folders.

2. Model Archive: includes zipped Input and Output files, zipped Source code, model georeference, and ReadMe file with instructions on how to run model.

3. Monthly BCM hydrology variables: monthly BCM hydrology variables zipped by decade constituting of 14 zipped folders for each of the 6 variables (described in 1., above), for a total of 84 zipped folders.

4. Monthly climate variables: four monthly climate variables zipped by decade constituting of 14 zipped folders for each variable, for a total of 56 zipped folders.

5. Water year summaries: monthly files summed for each of the 8 variables (aet, cwd, pck, rch, run, str, pet, and ppt) or averaged for the two temperature variables (tmn and tmx) by water year, zipped by variable from 1896-2024, for a total of 10 zipped folders.

Each zipped folder has a similar naming convention xxx_WYYYYY_YY, where:
1. YYYY indicates four digit year
2. With variable names: aet, cwd, pck, rch, run, str, pet, ppt, tmn, tmx
Files within those zipped folders have a structure, where:
1. YYYY indicates four digit year
2. mmm indicates three letter text abbreviation of month (from January-jan to December-dec)
3. With variable names: aet, cwd, pck, rch, run, str, pet, ppt, tmn, tmx

Files are model input and outputs, but may be opened using a text editor or geospatial software due to the header containing spatial information in the "NAD83 California Teale Albers (meters)" projection, 30 meters by 30 meters resolution. Date range from water years 1896 to 2024.

Spatial header (lines 1-6 of ascii files):
ncols = number of columns
nrows = number of rows
xllcorner = longitude of the lower left corner
yllcorner = latitude of the lower left corner
cellsize = cell size
NODATA_value = value for no data</eaover>
