Geologic map geodatabase depicting the geology of the Greater Antilles and Virgin Islands region, including countries of Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, and territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands. Database tables include: geologic linework, dikes, folds, geologic units, and geochronologic data.
<purpose>This dataset was compiled from published literature and has geologic map units integrated across the region. Digital maps may be displayed at any scale or projection, however the geologic data in this dataset is not intended for use at a scale larger than the source compilation maps. This digitized map allows users to accurately view the original map products along with any other geospatial information, filter objects on the map based on chosen criteria, and efficiently perform analyses.</purpose>
<supplinf>The "GreaterAntilles_data_README.pdf" document (included with this data release) provides detailed descriptions of all files. Briefly: this dataset is provided in Esri geodatabase and GeoPackage formats. Standalone tables in these databases that define map sources and geologic unit definitions are also provided in FileMaker Pro and CSV format. The Esri geodatabase is the native format and is described here. The geodatabase contains 7 feature classes, 13 standalone geodatabase tables, and 13 relationship classes that store associations between fields in the feature classes and standalone tables. These include:

      Feature classes:
GAgeol_arc - Polyline feature class containing contacts, faults, and other geologic line types that define polygon boundaries.
GAgeol_dike - Polyline feature class containing dikes.
GAgeol_fold - Polyline feature class containing folds.
GAgeol_struc - Polyline feature class containing seafloor faults.
GAgeol_poly - Polygon feature class of mapped geologic units.
GA_Radiometric - Point feature class of samples dated using radiometric age techniques.
GA_u_pb - Point feature class of samples dated using uranium lead age techniques.

      Standalone tables:
Tables may contain additional information for sources not used in the feature classes.
GA_age - Provides geologic age information for each GACLASS value.
GA_key - Source of the descriptive unit and symbology information added to the polygons for each GACLASS value.
GAlith - Contains lithology information for each GACLASS value.
GA_setlist - Provides the settings, and subset setting pick lists for source map units in the GA_setting database, as well as the general and typical lithologic assemblages relative to that setting.
GA_setting - Provides data on the geologic setting of map units that are tied to the GAunits database table.
GA_SIM_descrip - Ties GACLASS numbers to the more complete unit descriptions associated with the regional geologic map compilations.
GAqkey - A secondary lookup table that can be used in to create derivative map products. The key field is GASURF, which only applies to Quaternary units.
GArefs - Reference citations for source maps used to build the geologic dataset. The key field is SOURCE.
GAunits - Contains name, relative age, descriptions, and rock class information for geologic units documented in sources listed in GArefs.
GreatAnt_refs - Reference citations for source maps used to create the geologic, radiometric, and UPb age datasets. The key field is GAREF_ID.
IUGSlist - Contains the minimum and maximum ages for every Eon, Era, Period, Epoch, and Age. The age assignments are based on a slight modification of the IUGS 2023.
lithform - Contains lithologic-form terms used for lithologic coding of geologic units. Appendix 2 in the pamphlet.
lithlist - Contains all the lithologic terms (rock types) used in the lithologic coding. Appendix 1 in the pamphlet.
GA_data_dictionary - Describes fields used in the feature classes and other standalone tables.

      Relationship classes:
These are present in the geodatabase only.
GAarc_To_GArefs - GAgeol_arc is linked to table GArefs by shared field SOURCE in a one-to-one relationship.
GAdike_To_GArefs - GAgeol_dike is linked to table GArefs by shared field SOURCE in a one-to-one relationship.
GAfold_To_GArefs - GAgeol_fold is linked to table GArefs by shared field SOURCE in a one-to-one relationship.
GApoly_To_GA_age - GAgeol_poly is linked to table GA_age by shared field GACLASS in a one-to-one relationship.
GApoly_To_GA_key - GAgeol_poly is linked to table GA_key by shared field GACLASS in a one-to-one relationship.
GApoly_To_GA_lith - GAgeol_poly is linked to table GAlith by shared field GACLASS in a one-to-many relationship.

<attraccr>Published source maps were used to compile this dataset, and their map scales ranged from 1:20,000 to 1:1,000,000. <logic>The geologic data consists of attributed arcs and polygons. Each polygon has a coded attribute designating the mapped geologic unit. Faults, stratigraphic contacts, dikes, and fold axes are represented as arcs. When a fault is also a stratigraphic contact, only a single arc is present. Dangling arcs may be present (fault, dike, or fold). Geochronologic data are represented as points.</logic>
<complete>This dataset consists of arc, polygon, and point features depicting the geology of the islands: Cuba, Isla de la Juventud, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands. The dataset also includes many tables which contain additional information and can be linked to either the arc or polygon features. The information in the tables were derived from a set of related Filemaker Pro databases. The native Filemaker database files along with CSV files are also provided with this publication.</complete>
