This dataset consists of 424 paleomagnetic sites from Newberry Volcano. 15 sites were analyzed at the natural remanent magnetization level, 256 sites were analyzed with blanket demagnetization, and 153 sites were analyzed with modern stepwise demagnetization protocols. 412 sites yield acceptable paleomagnetic data.
      <purpose>These data were collected to assess the behavior of the geomagnetic field and assist in geologic mapping and correlation of volcanic units at Newberry Volcano. An appropriate use of the data would be to correlate volcanic units, identify periods of volcanic activity, or study the geomagnetic field.</purpose>
      <supplinf>The measurement level data for this dataset are in the MagIC database at https://earthref.org/MagIC/20334.</supplinf>

    <native>This dataset was produced on computers running DOS, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems over the decades-long production of these paleomagnetic data. Calculations on these data were performed with (laboratory-developed) Fortran and (open-source) Python software packages. The file format of the dataset is text (CSV or tab-delimited) files. There are 3 files in this data release: 'Newberry_sites_all.csv', 'Newberry_units_all.csv', 'Newberry_units_modern.csv'.</native>

        <procdesc>Paleomagnetic samples were collected and processed using standard paleomagnetic protocols (Butler, 1992). Sites consisted of multiple cores up to 12 cm long drilled with a gasoline-powered, water-cooled, diamond-bit coring drill from a single cooling unit. An astrocompass or sun compass was used for orienting when possible to correct magnetic declination.</procdesc>

    <overview>
      <eaover>There are two detailed tabs which describe the overall table: ('Newberry_sites_all.csv') and the two data files filtered from that one: ('Newberry_units_all.csv', 'Newberry_units_modern.csv').

Description of the data files:

'Newberry_sites_all.csv' : This table has the record of all 424 sites sampled around Newberry Volcano. Paleomagnetic data from successful analyses are presented. There are 18 columns.

'Newberry_units_all.csv': This table has the summary paleomagnetic data from all map units. If there were multiple sites in a given mapped volcanic unit, only the mean direction is on this table. If there was only one site in the map unit, then that site is presented. There are 16 columns.

'Newberry_units_modern.csv': This table has the summary paleomagnetic data from map units that were stepwise demagnetized in accordance with modern methods. All data from this table is contained in ‘Newberry_units_all.csv’; however, this table is most suitable for re-use in modern data compilations. There are 16 columns.</eaover>
