Throughout the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS), floods in 1993 and 2019 were record-setting events in terms of flood stage and duration of flooding. Floodplain tree species are adapted to survive moderate frequencies, intensities, and durations of inundation. These events generated interest in quantifying levels of tree mortality and presented an opportunity to study how differences in flood attributes may affect tree survivorship and forest community dynamics post-flood. In 1995, 547 plots randomly located within forested land cover were established within seven reaches on the Upper Mississippi River (Pool 4, Pool 8, Pool 13, Pool 17, Pool 22, Pool 26, Open River) and one reach of the Illinois River (La Grange Pool). In 2021, 39-46 sites (n = 342) from each of the eight reaches were navigated to using GPS coordinates from the original study and resurveyed using the same field sampling protocol used in 1995. In many cases (n = 287), the original posts and tree tags installed in 1995 could not be found and thus plots in 2021 were re-established by navigated as close to the original GPS coordinates as possible and referencing the 1995 data. In some of these cases (n = 24), plots were inaccessible (e.g., in a water body) due to landform changes that had occurred in the intervening years between field sample collections, and in these instances, plots were relocated to a nearby site with similar forest composition, elevation, and river geomorphology. Plots were re-established in order to maintain a consistent number of plots per reach for potential future monitoring, however, those that were moved were noted along with original 1995 coordinates in the provided ‘Plot_2021.csv’ file and can be included or removed in subsequent analyses depending on research questions and goals. Plots were sampled using a fixed radius sampling methodology with a radius of 10 meters, and data collected included: overstory species composition, diameters, and health status; canopy cover; seedling counts and composition; cover classes for different forest height strata; ground cover; and herbaceous cover. Seedlings, ground cover, and herbaceous cover were measured within ten randomly located 0.5 m x 0.5 m subplots.
<purpose>These data were collected with the purpose of assessing post-flood effects on floodplain forest plant communities and subsequent successional dynamics following the 1993 and 2019 floods across the UMRS. Plots were established within seven reaches of the Upper Mississippi River and one reach of the Illinois River.</purpose>

<procdesc>Data were collected during the growing seasons of 1995 and 2021 within eight reaches of the Upper Mississippi River System. Crews navigated to corresponding plot GPS coordinates and upon arrival, monumented plot centers in some fashion (i.e. steel post, rebar, pin flag, etc.). In addition to marking plot center, two live (healthy) trees >3.5 inches were chosen as reference points. Tree species, diameter at breast height (dbh), distance from plot center, and azimuth were recorded for each selected reference tree. Each plot contained ten 0.25 m² quadrats. Within quadrats, woody seedlings were identified, their heights measured, and approximate ages recorded. Also within quadrats, canopy coverage of woody species and percent cover of herbaceous species were estimated by height category. Quadrat cover class for the following categories were also recorded: overstory, subcanopy, understory, and woody vine cover using incremental cover estimates. Ground cover was also estimated at each quadrat in increments of Trace (T) for covers equal to or less than 1% and then in 5% increments thereafter for live standing trees (>2.5 cm diameter), down dead woody (> than 12.7 cm diameter), litter (dead plant material to include leaves and ddw < 12.7 cm diameter), bare ground, rock, water, and basal vegetation. Basal vegetation was a summation of all stems (< 2.5 cm dbh) within the quadrat. The total ground cover totaled to 100%. Within the entire plot, all trees >2.5 cm dbh were recorded, noting tree species, dbh, and vigor. Vigor was defined as dead prior to flood (D), dead after flood (FL), stressed (S), and currently vigorous/healthy (V). Following data collection, data were entered into excel spreadsheets and reviewed for errors. Only tree data are available for the 1995 sampling year.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Data were merged across reaches into six CSV files for each type of data collected: Plot information, tree data, seedling data, herbaceous data, ground cover data, and cover class data. Field names were edited for consistency across reaches before being merged. Coordinates provided for plot data were converted to UTM Zone 15 where needed for consistency. Data within each field of each CSV were assessed for missing values and values falling outside of the range of expected values. Whether a historical marker had been found from the 1995 sampling period during the 2021 survey was assessed by referencing the notes provided by field crews and recorded in a new column called 'Resample_status.' In one case the identify of a plot ID was discovered to have been mislabeled at one of the sites in pool 4 (Plot 68 was recorded as Plot 69). The Plot ID was accordingly adjusted to across CSV files. For woody seedlings, observations were filtered and restricted to those under 4.5 ft as any above 4.5 ft were already recorded in the tree data. For all categorical percent cover estimates, when estimates fell outside of the defined categories, they were adjusted to fall within the closest defined category.</procdesc>
