        <procdesc>The remaining fraction was bleached in commercially available 6% NaOCl in order to completely deflocculate the sediment and clear the samples, through digestion, of any remaining non-charcoal and partially burned organic matter. 

NOTE: To ensure methodological consistency, bleaching times for the entire sample set for the core was established experimentally. Replicate samples from each of the sediment types present in the core were processed with bleaching times ranging, in 1 h increments, from 1 to 4 h. The time required for deflocculation and digestion of the most resistant sediment type within the core was used for all samples from the core. Bleaching time was determined to be 4 h.</procdesc>
