      <abstract>Evaluating factors that affect recovery of canopy-forming, foundational species is needed to guide effective treatment implementation aimed at mitigating their loss due to the changing fire regimes being experienced in semi-arid shrub-steppe of the Western USA. Most inferences on factors influencing recovery are based on one-time measurements taken as a snapshot in time, usually focused on the short-term initial establishment phase or outcomes observed decades after. We measured factors associated with the secondary establishment of big sagebrush in nearly 2000 plots across a heterogeneous landscape five years after a megafire (115,000 ha) and the diverse mosaic of restoration treatments implemented and compare these findings to previously published inferences on initial, first-year germination patterns observed on the same plots.</abstract>

As an alternative, we present convenient equations for use in spreadsheet, GIS, and database applications. Input variables are latitude, slope, and aspect. The equations apply to 0-60° north latitude, slopes from 0-90°, and all aspects. By transforming aspect, the equations can also be applied as an index of heat load, symmetrical about a northeast to southwest axis.</othercit>

        <title>A physically based variable contributing area model of basin hydrology</title>

Abstract: A hydrological forecasting model is presented that attempts to combine the important distributed effects of channel network topology and dynamic contributing areas with the advantages of simple lumped parameter basin models. Quick response flow is predicted from a storage/contributing area relationship derived analytically from the topographic structure of a unit within a basin. Average soil water response is represented by a constant leakage infiltration store and an exponential subsurface water store. A simple non-linear routing procedure related to the link frequency distribution of the channel network completes the model and allows distinct basin sub-units, such as headwater and sideslope areas to be modelled separately. The model parameters are physically based in the sense that they may be determined directly by measurement and the model may be used at ungauged sites. Procedures for applying the model and tests with data from the Crimple Beck basin are described. Using only measured and estimated parameter values, without optimization, the model makes satisfactory predictions of basin response. The modular form of the model structure should allow application over a range of small and medium sized basins while retaining the possibility of including more complex model components when suitable data are available.</othercit>

Data was measured and recorded for vegetative community, soil pedoderm, and soil redistribution/erosion using a 13 m radius area centered on identified GPS coordinates. Sagebrush abundance was quantified using a Frequency/Density protocol where the search area varies depending on the number of sagebrush; as such, the search area begins with 1 square meter and increases to an 18 m radius plot until a minimum of 3 sagebrush are found.</procdesc>
