<procstep>
        <procdesc>We conducted field surveys in Soledad Canyon over a two-year period (2021- 2022), with three survey teams collecting data in six different stream sections. We began by dividing each stream section into a pre-defined set of reaches to which one team was assigned to survey three times during both years. Surveys were spaced roughly evenly apart between the early summer and winter months (June through December), with each team having a two-week window around specified dates to complete them. The last surveys in December were intended to take place before any major winter storms, representing the driest conditions possible in any given year (although storms sometimes arrive earlier than expected).

Surveys consisted of placing one unbaited minnow trap (Promar® Collapsible Bait Trap, 41 x 24.5 x 24.5 cm) every 10 m per 100m stream reach, in line with the flow such that fish passively swam into them. Traps were removed three hours after their initial placement, beginning at approximately 10AM for all surveys. Based on prior field efforts, conditions of the streamside vegetation, and high temperatures in the summer months, it was determined that three reaches (n = 30 traps total, or three ~100m reaches) could reasonably be surveyed during a typical day’s field work. Numbers of G. aculeatus and other fish species were reported for each trap at the end of each survey, as well as any others observed incidentally outside the traps. We recorded age class for G. aculeatus, with fish <42 mm classified as young-of-year and >42 mm as adults (Baskin 1974). In some cases, stream depth was insufficient to submerge the trap entry (i.e., <11.5 cm) but still deep enough for fish to occupy the reach, so surveyors instead performed a visual count across the 10m reach. We referred to these as ‘no trap (NT) visuals’ and treated them as equivalent to the trap data for statistical analyses. If the stream braided within a 100m reach, surveyors selected a single braid that appeared suitable for G. aculeatus and surveyed only that braid.</procdesc>
