      <abstract>This data release contains seasonal source-specific estimates of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) loading to streams across the Illinois River basin (25,620 reaches) for 21 years from 2000 through 2020 using a dynamic SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed attributes) model. Input data including calibration loads, output predictions, model control files, and model source code are provided to fully reproduce results. The modeled period was from December 1999 through November 2020 in seasonal timesteps, or 84 periods, and the following seasonal definitions were applied: winter includes December, January, and February; spring includes March, April, and May; summer includes June, July, and August; and fall includes September, October, and November.       <purpose>This work was conducted as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Integrated Water Availability Assessments (IWAAs) Program, which examines the spatial and temporal distribution of water quantity and quality in both surface and groundwater, as related to human and ecosystem needs and as affected by human and natural influences. Funding was provided by the National Water Quality Program. 

This data release contains all data and code needed to reproduce the results described in Schmadel and others (2024). Files include:

1. sparrow_control_IRB_TN.sas: The control file for the TN seasonally dynamic IRB SPARROW model;

2. sparrow_control_IRB_TP.sas: The control file for the TP seasonally dynamic IRB SPARROW model; 

3. master_dynamic.zip: SAS source code to run dynamic SPARROW models;

4. data1_IRB.txt: text file of data inputs including calibration loads for the IRB TN and TP SPARROW models;

5. calib_list_IRB_TN.txt: text file that contains a list of the TN calibration stations;

6. calib_list_IRB_TP.txt: text file that contains a list of the TP calibration stations; 

7. predict_IRB_TN.txt: text file of seasonal TN IRB SPARROW model outputs;

8. predict_IRB_TP.txt: text file of seasonal TP IRB SPARROW model outputs.</purpose>

        <procdesc>Estimates of seasonal streamflow

Seasonal streamflow was estimated for all stream reaches by extending measured discharge from NWIS at 89 gages to all other reaches using seasonal streamflow ratios for all unmonitored reaches. Seasonal streamflow ratios were based on long-term average seasonal flow fractions (for the period 1999 through 2020) from the NWM and long-term average estimated streamflow from SPARROW2012 at an unmonitored reach divided by the long-term average estimated streamflow at an assigned reference reach. Reference reaches were assigned in a three-step process: 

1. The mainstem reaches of the Illinois River (including parts of the Des Plaines River and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal) were assigned a reference reach associated with the nearest downstream mainstem gage, except for the lower reaches near the outlet, which were assigned to the nearest upstream mainstem gage (because there is no gage at the outlet).  
2. All non-mainstem reaches, upstream of a non-mainstem streamgage, were assigned that gage reach as their reference reach. 
3. All non-mainstem reaches that are not upstream of a non-mainstem gage were lumped by 10-digit hydrologic code (HUC10) and assigned the reference reach of the nearest gage for the largest number of the reaches in that HUC10. 

With the reference reaches assigned, seasonal streamflow at unmonitored reaches was calculated as the measured seasonal flow at the reference reach multiplied by the seasonal streamflow ratio for the unmonitored reach. 

Seasonal travel time through each reach was then estimated by the length from e2NHD and seasonal Jobson velocity as a reach-averaged approach. Jobson velocity was estimated using seasonal streamflow (from above) at each reach and average attributes of streambed slope and drainage area from e2NHD. Stream depth was estimated via power-law scaling with streamflow after Leopold and Maddock to compute the inverse hydraulic load as reach time of travel divided by depth. The inverse hydraulic load of waterbodies was estimates as the waterbody area from SPARROW2012 divided by estimated seasonal streamflow.</procdesc>

NHDPlusV2-catchment-level values were estimated from rasters of TNatm, WBM ClimGrid, and Tiles. The same procedure was applied to all rasters: Each raster cell that intersected and fell within each catchment polygon was area-weighted and summed (or averaged, for example, seasonal air temperature from WBM ClimGrid) to provide a catchment-level estimate. Catchment polygon shapefiles were provided by NHDPlusV2. TNatm, WBM ClimGrid, and Tiles raster data were area-weighted and approximated per NHDPlusV2 catchment using the R package exactextractr.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Fertilizer and manure seasonal application rates

NHDPlusV2-level estimates of fertilizer (farm and nonfarm) and manure (confined and unconfined) application rates from Sekellick are annual totals and available for 2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017. To fill the period of record 2000 through 2020, each year was reset with an updated value and 2000 and 2001 were filled with 2002 estimates. 

To estimate or parse annual those application rates seasonally, each annual estimate was multiplied by the relative fraction of ammonia emissions estimated from farm fields provided by CMAQ. The estimates provided by CMAQ are county-level, however, and needed to be estimated by NHDPlusV2 catchment. Therefore, seasonal fractions estimated by county were downscaled to all NHDPlusV2 catchments within each corresponding county. CMAQ values were also extended pre 2002 and post 2017 by gap filling with seasonal means.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Fill NLCD urban cover and CDL nitrogen fixing crops

Urban cover from NLCD was available for years 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2019. To fill the period of record 2000 through 2020, each year was reset with an updated value and 2000 was filled with 2001 estimates. NLCD land classification of 21 Developed Open Space, 22 Developed Low Intensity, 23 Developed Medium Intensity, and 24 Developed High Intensity were summed into a single urban cover variable.

The CDL dataset was complete for years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020. To fill the period of record 2000 through 2020, each year was reset with the next available year. Values from 2008 were used to fill years 2000-2007 assuming little change in crop coverage during that time period. an updated value and 2000 was filled with 2001 estimates. For the SPARROW models, several nitrogen fixing crops listed in CDL were combined into two groups: group 1 layers combined 5, 10, 36, 51, 52, 53, and 224, where 5=soybeans, 10=peanuts, 36=alfalfa, 51=chickpea, 52=lentil, 53=peas, and 224=vetch; group 2 layers combined 26, 58, 239, 240, 241, and 254, where 26=winter wheat/soybean, 58=clover/wildflower, 239=soybean/cotton, 240=soybean/oats, 241=corn/soybean, and 254=barley/soybean.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Gap fill point sources

Monthly point source load from Skinner is nearly complete with its representation of treated wastewater and sewage. However, some gaps in the dataset were identified further. 

In the IRB, values from Skinner were mostly complete from 2005 through 2020 yet contained some gaps in reporting from 2000 to 2004 based on comparisons of complete months year-by-year. Any remaining gaps identified were then filled with the corresponding long-term (2000-2020) monthly mean. Gaps each month were identified in two steps:

(1) The facility permit date from Skinner was assumed as the date a facility started discharging, and the first date of a possible gap.
(2)  If a facility reported values for more than 50% of the model period 2000-2020 after the permit date, any value blank after the facility date was identified as a gap. The gap was filled with the monthly mean computed from reported values from Skinner.  

Steps 1 and 2 above identified 20% of all model periods with a likely gap, mostly for earlier years 2000 through 2004. Following gap fill of any monthly values, seasonal loads were summarized by summing monthly values of each facility per season.</procdesc>

The SPARROW models require the SAS computer program and are run using the text-based control files that utilize a specified pathname structure. All pathnames must be updated to specified file locations. The input files from this Science Base page must be converted to SAS format (.sas7bdat) to be useable by the model and listed in the respective control files. Also see ReadMe.txt file included.

Files included to reproduce the Illinois River basin seasonally dynamic total nitrogen and total phosphorus SPARROW model inputs and outputs, 2000 through 2020 include 2 files (model control files) and 1 subdirectory (master_dynamic.zip source code).

This subdirectory contains the SPARROW master SAS code developed for static models (which is a collection of individual SAS programs consistent with Version 2.9 available at https://water.usgs.gov/nawqa/sparrow/sparrow-mod.html and documented in Fluxmaster). Within the master SAS code directory, the sparrow_calibrate.sas and sparrow_predict.sas files were updated to include a first-order lag process and provide seasonally dynamic estimates. Also provided are SAS scripts to estimate seasonal weights and adjust for serial correlation bias.  

The control files and source code require a data input file (data1_IRB.txt: text file of data inputs for the IRB TN and TP SPARROW models) to produce model results:

        <procdesc>Data were extensively checked and corrected for any obvious errors. The goal was consistent and complete data inputs across the model domain and period of record. Each data input was visually checked in map form and summary statistics of minimum, maximum, mean, median, and standard deviation we computed and checked to confirm data were complete and consistent. There were no corrections made to data inputs other than interpolation and gap filling as outlined in the previous process steps. Uncertainty analyses were also performed on the model predictions to confirm representative data inputs (see Schmadel and others (2024) for details). Although data checks and uncertainty analyses were extensive, a user should note that some errors in datasets may still exist, which would increase uncertainty in some locations of the model domain.</procdesc>

To run these models SAS computer program is required and all pathnames must be updated to specified file locations.
