This dataset contains drainage basin boundaries for 253 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages in Alaska that had at least 5 years of daily streamflow through September 30, 2017, three of which were delineated for alternate basin conditions. This compilation includes selected boundaries produced in 2014 (https://doi.org/10.5066/P143KNEJ). Additional basin boundaries were delineated from the streamgage location to the nearest USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) HUC boundary and along HUC boundaries from that intersection to the basin headwaters. Streamgages selected for drainage basin delineation included streamgages in Alaska that met selection criteria for a statewide study of seasonal flow regimes (Curran and Biles, 2021). Sites for that study included USGS streamgages that had at least 5 years of daily streamflow that responded mostly to seasonal meteorological inputs, that had a definable drainage basin above a minimum size from which basin characteristics could be determined, and that provided streamflow data not similar to another streamgage record in the dataset. For three streamgages, the drainage basin boundary was delineated for the drainage area associated with regulated (diverted) or unregulated streamflow conditions contemporaneous with a period of streamflow record other than the present. Selected basins were previously published in the WBD as "NWISDrainageArea" features.
<purpose>The drainage basin boundaries were developed to represent drainage basins for selected USGS streamgages in Alaska for the purpose of obtaining basin characteristics for a statewide study of seasonal flow regimes (Curran and Biles, 2021).</purpose>

<procdesc>Selected streamgage drainage basin boundaries produced in 2014 (https://doi.org/10.5066/P143KNEJ) are included in the dataset (distinguished by the 'EditYear' and 'OrigPub' attributes). For additional streamgages delineated in 2019, the streamgage location was snapped to the nearest flowline of the NHD (USGS The National Map). Basin boundaries were digitized on-screen from the snapped streamgage location to the nearest HUC boundary using digital topographic maps, supplemented with available imagery, lidar topographic data, or field notes in topographic settings difficult to interpret or subject to rapid change, such as low-lying areas, the terminus of retreating glaciers, or urban areas. Topographic data used included USGS 1:63,360 topographic maps (USGS The National Map) and Natural Resources Canada 1:50,000 topographic maps (GeoGratis). HUC boundaries were followed to the headwaters of the basin to form the rest of the boundary. The basin boundaries were consistent with HUC boundaries at the time of editing (2019) and have not been adjusted for subsequent HUC boundary updates. Drainage area in square miles and in square kilometers were computed from the basin boundaries. After resolving any large discrepancies from existing values in the National Water Information System (NWIS), the computed drainage areas were used to update drainage area in NWIS.</procdesc>
