The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has compiled a geodatabase containing mineral-related geospatial data for 19 countries of interest in the Indo-Pacific region (area of study): Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Fiji, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. The data can be used in analyses of the extractive fuel and nonfuel mineral industries integral for the successful operation of the mineral industries within the area of study. This geodatabase reflects the USGS ongoing commitment to its mission of understanding the nature and distribution of global mineral commodity supply chains by updating and publishing the georeferenced locations of mineral commodity production and processing facilities, mineral exploration sites, and mineral sites and processing facilities under development for the countries in the area of study. The geodatabase contains data feature classes from USGS, foreign governmental, and open-source sources as follows: (1) mineral production and processing facilities, (2) mineral exploration sites, (3) mineral production and processing facilities under development, (4) undiscovered mineral resource tracts for copper, (5) coal occurrence areas, (6) undiscovered, technically recoverable conventional and continuous hydrocarbon resources (by USGS geologic province), and (7) cumulative production and recoverable conventional resources (by province groups).
<purpose>The primary goal of this project was to compile a range of geospatial data feature classes in this ArcGIS (ESRI) geodatabase that can be used in analyses of the extractive fuel and nonfuel mineral industries in 19 countries of interest in the Indo-Pacific region (area of study), which are integral for the successful operation of the mineral industries within the region.</purpose>

<procstep>
<procdesc>Surveys of relevant foreign governmental mining and petroleum agencies, ministries, and scientific counterpart agencies were conducted to assess their geospatial data holdings. Three data feature classes were created by NMIC researchers using NMIC / USGS data as well as extensive research into individual operations: mineral extraction and processing facilities, mineral exploration sites, and mineral extraction and processing facilities under development. In addition, three data feature classes were created by NMIC researchers using regional- and/or country-level NMIC / USGS data: oil and gas undiscovered conventional resources (by geologic province), oil and gas undiscovered continuous resources (by geologic province), and oil and gas recoverable resources and cumulative production (by country). Data were assembled into geodatabase-normalized formats for use within the GIS and geospatial PDF map product. Additional geospatial data, such as tracts of undiscovered mineral resource assessments, cartographic elements (rivers, lakes), and political / administrative boundaries were imported from external sources in geodatabase-normalized formats with some modifications as outlined in the database-level metadata files for each feature class. These modifications included re-labeling feature attributes to fit our GIS attributes table schema, excluding data not relevant for the purpose of the GIS product (e.g. features outside the area of interest), or merging features for ease of displaying them in the final GIS and geospatial PDF map product.</procdesc>

<enttypl>Indo-Pacific Mineral Development (GIS Feature Class)</enttypl>
<enttypd>This feature class contains the location of 285 fuel and non-fuel mineral production and processing sites under development in Indo-Pacific nations defined as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Fiji, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Vietnam compiled from a variety of sources by the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Sources include company reports and press releases, scientific/geologic reports, industry reports, and government reports. The dataset provides some generalized information about each mineral development site, such as name of the development site or facility, mineral commodity(ies) to be produced or processed, status (as of the most recent information available), operator/ownership, and location descriptions. The data are not comprehensive and are intended to highlight the general distribution of the potential areas of future mineral resource extraction and development in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Fiji, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Vietnam.</enttypd>

<enttypl>Indo-Pacific Mineral Exploration (GIS Feature Class)</enttypl>
<enttypd>This feature class contains the location of 884 mineral exploration sites in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Fiji, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam compiled from a variety of sources by the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Sources include company reports and press releases, scientific/geologic reports, industry reports, and government reports. The data are not comprehensive and are intended to highlight the general distribution of mineral exploration sites and potential areas of future mineral resource extraction and development in the Indo-Pacific region. The dataset provides some generalized information about each exploration project, such as project name, main mineral commodity(ies) of interest, exploration status, year of last known activity, location descriptions, and ownership. For instances in which little information beyond the name, commodity, and generalized location of an exploration site is known or available, we assigned the centroid coordinates (low accuracy) of either the first level administrative region (ADM1, if available) or the country in which the site is known to be located.</enttypd>

<enttypl>Indo-Pacific Mineral Production and Processing Facilities (GIS Feature Class)</enttypl>
<enttypd>This feature class contains the location of 1,573 fuel and non-fuel mineral production and processing operations in Indo-Pacific nations defined as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Burma, Fiji, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam compiled from a variety of sources by the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The dataset provides some generalized information about each mineral operation, such as name of the operation or facility, mineral commodity(ies) produced or processed, status, capacity, operator/ownership, and location descriptions. Non-GIS data were derived from Table 2 of individual advanced release country chapters published in the USGS 2019 Minerals Yearbook, Vol. III (Area Reports: International) publication. All data were reorganized and restructured from their original format to fit our GIS attributes table format, updated for accuracy when additional information was available, and georeferenced for this geodatabase using various sources that included company documents (annual reports, press releases, etc.), scientific/geologic reports, industry reports, government reports, maps, digital mapping services, and minerals- and mining-specific databases, as noted for each record. The data are intended to highlight the state of the minerals industries in select countries of the Indo-Pacific.</enttypd>

<enttypl>Indo-Pacific Mineral Resource Assessment of Copper (GIS Feature Class)</enttypl>
<enttypd>This feature class contains spatial and descriptive data in the form of 34 polygons that represent permissive tracts for porphyry copper deposits in Burma, Fiji, Malaysia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Taiwan, and Vietnam. The tracts outline the principal areas in the countries of interest that have potential for undiscovered porphyry copper resources. Those with a quantitative estimate of resources were assessed to depths of 1 km below the earth's surface. Attributes include tract identifiers, tract name, location coordinates, country and state or province, grade/tonnage model used to assess tract, a brief description of the basis for tract delineation, age, and assessment results. The original dataset was created for USGS Scientific Investigations Series Report 2010–5090–Z, which is part of the USGS assessment of undiscovered copper resources of the world. In this feature class, all polygons that delineate permissive tracts entirely outside of our study area were excluded, some attributes were excluded or summarized, and the attribute field names have been modified from their original source to fit our GIS attributes table schema; descriptive field aliases were created from the original field names in the source data.</enttypd>

<enttypl>Indo-Pacific Oil & Gas Undiscovered Resources, Continuous (GIS Feature Class)</enttypl>
<enttypd>This feature class contains data for the Total Mean Volumes of undiscovered, technically recoverable continuous hydrocarbon resources in oil fields and in gas fields reported by geologic province that lie within or overlap with Mongolia as assessed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Continuous hydrocarbon resources include coalbed methane, shale gas, tight gas, shale oil, and tight oil. Data are stored as polygon attributes, summarized by USGS geologic province as hydrocarbon resources in oil fields, in gas fields, and total including a BOE [barrel of oil equivalent = oil + NGL + gas (BCF/6) ]. Data were derived from USGS assessments of undiscovered hydrocarbon resources in USGS Fact Sheet FS2018-3040. This dataset only includes the total mean volume for each geologic province; assessed province volumes are sums of individual USGS assessment units within the province. Links to the corresponding provinces in the USGS World Energy website, which lists USGS publications for that province, are included for each record in this dataset in the attributes table. Data are rounded to no more than three significant digits and may not add to totals shown. Units are million barrels of oil (MMBO), billion cubic feet gas (BCFG), millions of barrels of natural gas liquids (MMBNGL), millions of barrels of liquids (MMBL), and millions of barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE).</enttypd>

<enttypl>Indo-Pacific Oil & Gas Undiscovered Resources, Conventional (GIS Feature Class)</enttypl>
<enttypd>This feature class contains data for the Total Mean Volumes of undiscovered, technically recoverable conventional hydrocarbon resources in oil fields and in gas fields reported by geologic province or province groups that lie within or overlap with Bangladesh, Brunei, Burma, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea (Republic of Korea), Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam as assessed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Data are stored as polygon attributes, summarized by USGS geologic province* as hydrocarbon resources in oil fields, in gas fields, and total including a BOE [barrel of oil equivalent = oil + NGL + gas (BCF/6)]. Data were derived from various USGS assessments of undiscovered hydrocarbon resources, USGS Digital Data Series (DDS-069-FF), and USGS Fact Sheets (FS2012-3029, FS2018-3041, and FS2020-3046) as indicated for each data record (see also the Credits section of this metadata). This dataset only includes the total mean volume for each geologic province; assessed province volumes are sums of individual USGS assessment units within the province. For geologic province groups, only total assessed values for oil, gas, and natural gas liquid were published, aggregated by province group. Fields marked as "-222.222" in the attribute table denote data not published for province groups. Fields marked as "-111.111" in the attribute table denote data for individual provinces are reported combined with one or more other provinces or province group. Links to the corresponding provinces in the USGS World Energy website, which lists USGS publications for that province, are included for each record in this dataset. Data are rounded to no more than three significant digits and may not add to totals shown. Units are million barrels of oil (MMBO), billion cubic feet gas (BCFG), millions of barrels of natural gas liquids (MMBNGL), millions of barrels of liquids (MMBL), and millions of barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE).
*The names of the following USGS geologic provinces have been updated in this dataset: "Mekong/Cuulong/Vung Tau Basin" updated to "Cuu Long Basin" (USGS FS2020-3046), "Khorat Platform" updated to "Khorat Plateau," "Saigon Basin" updated to "Nam Con Son Basin" (USGS FS2020-3046), "Central Vietnam Basin" updated to "Phu Khanh Basin" (USGS FS2020-3046), "Yinggehai Basin" updated to "Song Hong Basin" (USGS FS2020-3046), "Sumatra/Java Fore-Arc Basins" updated to "Sumatra-Java Forearc Basins," "Pamusian Tarakan Basin" updated to "Tarakan Basin" (USGS FS2020-3046), "Thailand Mesozoic Basin Belt" updated to "Thai Cenozoic Basins" (USGS FS2020-3046). For province groups, updated names of individual provinces within each group are denoted by an asterisk next to the name in the "Province Notes (MemoOther)" field of the attribute table.</enttypd>

Data are stored as polygon attributes, summarized by region (countries, territories, and administrative areas) as hydrocarbon resources in oil fields, in gas fields, and total including a BOE [barrel of oil equivalent = oil + NGL + gas (BCF/6)] (NGL = natural gas liquids). Data were derived from EDIN International Oil and Gas Database [S&P Global Commodity Insights] (accessed March 24, 2023), and include continuous resources (coalbed methane, shale gas, tight gas, shale oil, and tight oil). Units are million barrels of oil (MMBO), millions of barrels of natural gas liquids (MMBNGL), billion cubic feet gas (BCFG), and millions of barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE). With the exception of total number of fields, data are rounded to no more than three significant digits and may not add to totals shown. Data denoted as "-111.111" are withheld to conceal proprietary data of single oil or gas fields. Null entries (no data) are denoted as "-999.999." Malaysia does not include 25 gas fields that are located within the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area (JDA) which are listed separately in a polygon feature outlining the boundaries of the Malaysia-Thailand JDA.
