No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted Water-levels, corrected for local barometric pressure, were recorded using water level loggers at a sub-set of the six study locations where water quality samples, bird use and habitat data were also collected, three locations both within the impounded and tidal marshes of the BSNWR. Field water-quality measurements were collected using a water quality sonde equipped with a depth transducer for measuring water depths and sensors for measuring water temperature, specific conductance (salinity), pH, dissolved oxygen, and oxygen percent saturation. Profile measurements were collected from approximately 0.5m above the water-sediment interface at the bottom (btm), at mid-depths (if available), and 0.5m below the approximate water surface (top) to help determine whether any water quality stratification is occurred, including salinity stratification and hypoxia in bottom waters that serve as habitat for bottom dwelling organisms. In addition, near-surface habitats, those found at the top of the water column, can exhibit elevated pH and oxygen saturation during the day when phytoplankton blooms are concentrated near the surface in the euphotic zone. Maximum depths in the euphotic zone, where photosynthesis occurs, were estimated from Secchi depth measurements. Water quality samples were collected from the surface at each study locations on a seasonal basis and analyzed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total suspended solids (TSS). All DOC sample results are considered estimates because they exceeded normal hold time for chemical analysis at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Eastern Energy and Environmental Laboratory in Reston, VA. DOC values were so high in the study that the expected corrections (slight loss of DOC concentrations, bias low) due to time exceedance are minimal. TSS samples were processed in the USGS Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center Sediment Laboratory in Baton Rouge, LA.
