The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program, through its Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element, collected aerial imagery of the systemic Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) during the summer of 2020. A Land Cover/Land Use (LCU) spatial database was developed based on the 2020 aerial imagery, which adds a fourth systemic-wide database to the existing 1989, 2000, and 2010/11 LCU databases. These data have been used to create a variety of products, one of which is a data set used to classify aquatic areas. The 2020 aquatic areas data sets were created by first generalizing the available land cover/use data into a land/water data set, then reinterpreting the areas classified as water to determine the type of aquatic area. Area coverage for this data set is the Upper Mississippi River between Minneapolis, MN and Cairo, IL, and the Illinois River from its confluence with the Mississippi to Joliet, IL.
<purpose>The Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center administers the US Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) Program, Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element, authorized under the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-662). The mission of the UMRR-LTRM is to provide decision-makers with information to maintain the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) as a viable large river ecosystem given its multiple-use character. The long-term goals of the program are to understand the system, determine resource trends and impacts, develop management alternatives, manage information, and develop useful products. The creation and distribution of aquatic areas data for the UMRS aids the Center in meeting these goals.</purpose>

The Main Navigation Channel was then compared with the currently available edition of the United States Army Corps of Engineers - Army Geospatial Center - Inland Electronic Navigation Chart and adjusted to best approximate the current navigation corridor. Day marks, depth contours, hydraulic structures (dykes and revetments) and the recommended track (also known as sailing line) were all utilized in delineating an approximate Main Navigation Channel. This delineation is intended only to denote the most likely corridor of commercial river traffic as one of the types of aquatic areas in this dataset, and not to be used for any navigation purposes. Channel Border polygons were also adjusted to encompass structures and extend to shorelines where applicable.</procdesc>

            <edomv>Main Navigation Channel</edomv>
<edomvd>Main Navigation Channel is the designated navigation corridor marked by channel buoys. In reaches where buoys are not used, the centerline of the navigation channel is defined by lights and daymarks on shore that pilots use for navigation. The navigation channel on most of the UMRS is 91.4 m (300 ft) wide in straight reaches and 152.4 m (500 ft) wide in bends. The navigation channels in the upper pools of the UMRS and tributary waterways are narrower. The prescribed width and depth of at least 9 ft (2.6 m) are maintained by the navigation dams and by dredging where necessary. The navigation channel extends through the locks at each lock and dam. The navigation channel is usually in the main channel but in some reaches, it is located in secondary channels (Wilcox, D. B. 1993).</edomvd>

            <edomv>Contiguous Floodplain Lake</edomv>
<edomvd>Contiguous Floodplain Lake areas are hydraulically connected by surface gravity flow at reference river discharge. For mapping purposes, contiguous means having apparent surface water connection with the rest of the river (Wilcox, D. B. 1993).</edomvd>

            <edomv>Tributary Channel</edomv>
<edomvd>Tributary Channels are channels of tributary streams and rivers. The landward boundary is the line where the tributary crosses the study area boundary. The lateral boundaries are the apparent shorelines and any inundated natural bank lines. The riverward limit of a tributary channel is a line drawn across the downstream limits of the apparent shoreline or where the inundated natural bank lines of tributary channels merge with the surrounding bottom (Wilcox, D. B. 1993).</edomvd>

            <edomv>Side Channel</edomv>
<edomvd>Side Channels are large channels that carry less flow than the main channel. Boundaries of secondary channel areas are the apparent shorelines and straight lines across the mouths of upstream and downstream limits of the apparent shorelines where secondary channels connect with other aquatic areas (Wilcox, D. B. 1993).</edomvd>
