From 20 May - 8 June 2021, a Virginia Tech team of 2-3 sampled the macroinvertebrate community in 30 Shenandoah Valley streams (Virginia and West Virginia, USA) as part of a larger stream-health study including other teams who surveyed geomorphology, water quality, flow, temperature, fish community, and fish health at the same 30 streams. The macroinvertebrate community team also characterized the habitat units sampled for macroinvertebrates. At each stream, we sampled macroinvertebrates in two ways:1) in each stream we took 5 slack samples in riffles according to NAWQA protocol, and 2) we selected the most available and productive habitat where we used the Slack sampler to collect 5 additional samples in wood debris accumulations, undercut banks or leaf packs. Mesh size was 250 micrometer and samples were all taken for a known area. Other measurements included water temperature, electrical conductivity, and clarity, and percent of the reach comprising pool, riffle, and run habitats.
<purpose>These macroinvertebrate community data were collected as part of a larger interdisciplinary Shenandoah Valley field campaign (https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/636a6018d34ed907bf6a684f) to evaluate the effect of agricultural land use and conservation practices on holistic stream health.</purpose>

<procdesc>Sampling took place in 30 stream reaches across the Shenandoah River Valley, VA, with stream catchments selected as part of a gradient of agricultural landuse. Selected streams were grouped together into categories of high, medium, and low agriculture and BMP intensity. Streams were selected to be low gradient and of suitable length to conduct macroinvertebrate sampling (300m overall reach minimum) following regional sampling protocols (i.e., NAWQA and MBSS). Quantitative samples of benthic macroinvertebrates were collected at five riffles using a D-frame kick net. The sampling effort was 1-2 minutes over a 0.5m2 length of habitat. When only wood was available, a comparable area was scrubbed, slurry sieved, and saved. All samples were saved individually and preserved in 95% ethanol (EtOH). Macroinvertebrates have been identified to the lowest taxonomic value (e.g., genera and tribe) in the lab using established keys.
For the analysis of our data, we utilized code from the ICPRB (Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin) to calculate the macroinvertebrate metrics and Chessie B-IBI scores for the 30 sites in Typology 1 of this project, as provided by Rikke D. Jepsen (rjepsen@icprb.org) from the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin and Zachary M. Smith (zachary.smith2@dec.ny.gov) from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. We utilized the ICPRB code to calculate the designated metrics and derive the overall Chessie-BIBI, adhering to regional standards for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. An important aspect of the code is the inclusion of a rarefaction step. This step standardizes the count of individuals across different datasets, addressing sample count variability, which was shown to lead to bias in the results (Smith et al. 2017). To mitigate this bias, the ICPRB Chessie B-IBI scoring was simulated 100 times to ensure robust and accurate results by providing a mean and median score, along with the standard deviation from the 100 simulated scores. The calculated metrics were aggregated at Family or Genus levels, depending on the context of the analysis. Richness and diversity metrics, however, were calculated using taxa identified to the Genus level. In addition, the calculations for the Hilsenhoff Biotic Index (HBI) and Modified Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT_MOD) required the assignment of Tolerance Values (TVs) to each taxon. Taxa lacking an assigned TV were excluded from these calculations to ensure metric accuracy. This rigorous approach enhances the reliability and scientific validity of the Chessie BIBI process, aligning it with USGS protocols while maintaining the integrity of the research. provide a concise description of the Chessie BIBI process.</procdesc>
