This dataset represents 9,097 basin boundaries (rdews_gages.shp) of select U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) active and historical stream gages derived from the published datasets of stream gage basins (Wieczorek, 2006), GAGESII (Falcone, 2011), and delineated from digital elevation models found in the NHDPlus version 1 data suite (NHDPlus, 2006). These basins were created to assist in spatial processing of model inputs for the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Data-Driven Drought Prediction Project of the Drought Science Program within the Water Resources Mission Area's Water Resource Availability Program.
<purpose>These data sets were created by the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) Data-Driven Drought Prediction Project of the Drought Science Program within the Water Resources Mission Area's Water Resource Availability Program. This project focuses on the development of a regional model prototype for streamflow drought prediction, applying data-driven methods in conjunction with members of the National Drought Prediction project. These data were processed to be used as spatial units to process data sets of natural, climatic, and anthropogenic landscape features to support statistical analysis, map display, and model parameterization.</purpose>

<useconst>The USGS shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of these data, based on the description of
appropriate/inappropriate uses described in this metadata document. It is strongly recommended that these
data be directly acquired from the distributor and not indirectly through other sources that may have changed
the data in some way. These data should not be used at scales greater than 1:24,000 for the purpose of
identifying hydrographic watershed boundary feature locations. The USGS makes no claims for the data's
suitability for other purposes. The USGS should be acknowledged as the data source in products derived
from these data. The dataset is public information and may be interpreted by all organizations, agencies,
units of government, or others based on needs; however, they are responsible for the appropriate application
of the data. Files are dated, and users are responsible for obtaining the latest version of the data from the
source distributor. Basin boundaries are based on the published locations of "USGS Streamgages Linked
to the Medium Resolution NHD" (Stewart and others, 2006).</useconst>

<procdesc>Basins were delineated only for those gages that did not exist in the streamgage basins (Wieczorek, 2012) but did in GAGESII (Falcone, 2012). An additional 30 stream gages were also included in the Colorado River basin that were not in either dataset. This resulted in 890 gage locations to be delineated. Stream gage locations for these 890 gages were provided from the USGS published dataset, GageLoc (Stewart and others, 2006). Visual inspection and editing were performed to place gage locations in their proper place on NHDPlus Version 1 flow direction and flow accumulation rasters for further processing outlined in Step 2.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Basins were delineated for the 890 gages outlined in Step1. Watersheds were delineated using the ESRI WATERSHED function, which uses flow-direction grids from the NHDPlus version 1 data suite (USEPA, 2006) and point locations derived in Step 1. Only the basin boundaries that were delineated within 15 percent of the basin area reported in the National Water Information System (NWIS) were retained and referred to as rdews_basins. This resulted in 632 out 890 basins deemed delineated correctly. The remaining 258 basins were retained from the gagesii dataset and included in the final set of 9,097 stream gage basins.</procdesc>
