        <procdesc>Bacillus anthracis spore counts:
Soil samples were collected at the soil surface (0-1cm depth) in the center of the carcass site, with many subsamples within 1m of the marked center of the carcass site collected with a sterile spoon pooled into one sample for analyses. These soil samples were assessed via bacterial culture in serial dilution on PLET (polymyxin B sulfate, lysozyme, EDTA and thallous acetate) agar, methods adapted from standard protocols (see paper associated with this dataset). For the soil samples, five grams of homogenized soil was combined with 45ml 0.1% sodium pyrophosphate in a 50ml centrifuge tube then vortexed at maximum speed for 10 minutes to break up soil clumps. Samples were then centrifuged at 0.3x1000 rcf for 2 minutes to settle larger soil particles and the supernatant transferred to a new centrifuge tube and centrifuged at 3.0 x 1000 rcf for 15 minutes to pellet the sample. The pellet was resuspended in 5ml of sterile distilled water. One ml of the resuspended pellet was used to create serial dilutions from 100 to 10-5 (the number of dilutions plated depended on the site age and sample type), and 100μl of the selected dilutions was plated directly. Plates were placed in an incubator at 30C for two days. Colonies of B. anthracis were identified morphologically, and plates were examined and B. anthracis colonies counted after two days. In cases where the identification of a colony was uncertain, the colony was streaked on nutrient agar for B. anthracis confirmation tests to determine if the colony had penicillin sensitivity and was lysed by gamma phage. The number of CFU/g was determined for all dilutions that were countable. Quantification of the CFU/g of soil was based on the plate with the smallest dilution in the dilution series that had CFU counts of 30-300 colonies, or the lowest dilution with colonies, if all counts were smaller than 30.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Soil characterization:
Soil samples from each carcass site (four 10cm cores, pooled by site) were collected near carcass sites to test if soil characteristics altered Bacillus anthracis (BA) persistence over time, measuring soil texture and composition, pH, organic matter, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na. These cores were collected in each direction 9m from the marking stake at the center of the carcass site. This is because carcasses can significantly alter soils and we were interested in local soil conditions without the effect of the carcass. One sample was collected per site in 2012/2013 and a second in 2014. These two samples were analyzed independently but were similar enough that we averaged the two samples and the data reported here are the average of these two samples from each site. Soil analyses were conducted at the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry Laboratory in Windhoek, Namibia using standard methods (Association of Official Analytical Chemists, Official Methods of Analysis of the AOAC International, 1996).</procdesc>
