This dataset contains the number of buildings and their construction dates within the 15 study watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Dataset reflects existing buildings as of October 2021 and construction dates range from 1810 to 2021. The dataset was created by matching parcel boundaries obtained from Gwinnett County with building construction dates from the Gwinnett County Cadastral database. Building densities were calculated for each watershed and year to estimate temporal changes in watershed building densities.
      <purpose>The purpose of this dataset is to provide the building and construction date data for the 15 Gwinnett County study watersheds. This data was used to calculate the average building construction year and to estimate temporal changes in building densities from 1950 to 2020 for the study watersheds in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Scientific Investigations Report "Hydrology, water-quality, and watershed characteristics in 15 watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia, 2002-20". This study is part of a long-term program to monitor and analyze the hydrologic and water-quality conditions of 15 watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia by the USGS in cooperation with Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources.</purpose>

        <procdesc>Parcel boundaries were obtained from Gwinnett County in December 2021. Building construction dates were determined from the Gwinnett County Cadastral database representing October 2021 (Cadastral database), which were then matched to the parcels using their assigned PIN. Building construction years were available for 99.6 percent of the property records intersecting with the study watersheds. Average building construction year for each watershed was calculated as the average year built of parcels in the watershed.
Building data was determined for the 15 study watersheds using the drainage areas shapefile 01_GwinnettCoGa_Watersheds_StreamStats.shp on child page “01: Watersheds shapefile for the 15 study watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia.” Small portions of four study watersheds extend outside of the county boundary (Yellow River near Snellville [3.0] and near Lithonia [2.5] Suwanee Creek [4.6] and Crooked Creek [1.3] watersheds; percentage of watershed area outside of county in square brackets). For these basins, the number of buildings reflect the areas within Gwinnett County and building densities were calculated based on the area of the watershed within the county.
Data was processed in January 2022.</procdesc>

    <overview>
      <eaover>This dataset contains the number of buildings and their construction dates in the 15 study watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia in October 2021. The dataset was created by matching parcel boundaries obtained from Gwinnett County with building construction dates from the Gwinnett County Cadastral database (Gwinnett County Information Technology Services, 2021). The dataset contains building data only for Gwinnett County, while 4 watersheds have small areas outside the county area. Construction dates range from 1810 to 2021. Building densities for each year were calculated as the number of buildings divided by the watershed area within Gwinnett County. The cumulative number of buildings and building densities for years prior to 2021 represents a lower limit because the dataset reflects buildings existing as of October 2021 and does not account for some older buildings that have been destroyed or replaced by newer buildings.</eaover>
