This Geographic Information System dataset contains a shapefile of the stormwater drainage area boundaries for the 15 study watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Stormwater drainage areas were delineated using a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and the stormwater pipe network within Gwinnett County as of August 2021.
<purpose>The purpose of this dataset is to provide the stormwater drainage areas Geographic Information System shapefile used in the study of 15 Gwinnett County watersheds. The stormwater drainage area boundaries were used to determine the impacts of stormwater infrastructure on drainage patterns in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Scientific Investigations Report "Hydrology, water-quality, and watershed characteristics in 15 watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia, 2002-20". This study is part of a long-term program to monitor and analyze the hydrologic and water-quality conditions of 15 watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia by the USGS in cooperation with Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources.</purpose>

<attraccr>There was uncertainty in the determination of the stormwater drainage areas due to uncertainties in the exact locations of the stormwater network pipes and the assumption that the intakes and outlets of pipes are at the same elevations as its data pixel determined from the DEM. Some of this uncertainty was reduced by using a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM; 5-foot grid resolution) but small discrepancies can sometimes result in a substantial change in basin drainage.</attraccr>

<procdesc>Stormwater drainage areas, which account for water diverted through the stormwater network, were delineated for each watershed from a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and the stormwater pipe network. The DEM was derived from lidar data provided from Gwinnett County for 2015 and had a 5-foot grid resolution (Digital elevation model). The stormwater pipe network within Gwinnett County was provided by the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources and represented the network as of August 2021 (Stormwater pipe network). Stormwater pipes outside of Gwinnett County were not included in the analysis. The Whitebox Tools (v1.4.0) FillBurn tool was used to burn the stormwater pipe network into the original DEM and the breach depressions least cost path tool (distance = 10 and fill = True) was used breach obstructions and to fill any remaining unbreached depressions. An eight direction (d8) flow pointer and accumulation raster were used to delineate the stormwater drainage area for each site. The stormwater drainage area incorporates areas where stormwater pipes could divert water across drainage divides.</procdesc>
