This dataset documents the water quality in depth, salinity, and pH as well as the vegetation found in the freshwater swamps of Hickory Point State Forest near Pocomoke City, Maryland from 2013 to 2021.
<purpose>This data was collected as part of a study on trends in vegetation in a tidal freshwater swamp experiencing saltwater intrusion. The data on water depth, salinity, and pH was used to determine water quality in the study. The vegetation data was collected to determine shifts in dominant vegetation types in correlation with the water data.</purpose>

<procdesc>During the growing seasons of 2013 through 2021, herbaceous species and woody seedlings were assessed in a one-m2 quadrat at five plot locations along a 125 m transect running through Hickory Point State Forest. At each plot marker, day-of-site visit measurements of water quality and depth (with a meter stick) were sampled. Pore water was sampled from approximately 15 cm under the surface of the ground. Salinity and pH were measured with a temperature-compensated meter after the collected water was transported to the lab.</procdesc>
