This portion of the data release presents linescan images (photographs) from vibracores collected from Searsville Lake, a reservoir in Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, Stanford, California in October 2018 (USGS Field Activity 2018-682-FA). Images were obtained from two vibracores (JRBP2018-VC01A and JRBP2018-VC01B) at 50-micron (200 pixel per cm) resolution. Color images in 16-bit TIFF format are provided for each core segment, along with proprietary metadata files containing image scaling information.
      <purpose>Images were obtained to characterize sediments in vibracores. These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public.</purpose>

      <procstep>
        <procdesc>Cores were collected on October 29, 2018. A handheld global satellite navigation system (GNSS) receiver was used to determine the locations of sediment samples. Cores were segmented into 150 cm (or shorter) sections in the field and split into "working" and "archive" halves in the lab. Sediment surfaces were cleaned and smoothed on the "working" halves of split cores. A Geotek V Linescan Imaging system mounted to a Geotek Multisensor Core Logger (MSCL) was used to automate continuous downcore photography. A prime lens with a 50 mm focal length was mounted 38.6 cm above the core surface. Cross polarized light emitting diodes (LED) were used to illuminate the sediment surface. Colors were calibrated in the Geotek Linescan software using an 18 percent gray card and images were acquired at an aperture of f4.07 and exposure time of 80 milliseconds. Each zip file corresponding to individual core segments contain two color images in 16-bit TIFF format, along with proprietary metadata files containing image scaling information. The TIFF filenames ending in '_R' contain an embedded vertical scale on the left-hand side. Zip file names correspond to the names of each core segment. For example ‘JRBP2018-VC01A-289-439cm_linescan.zip’ contains two TIFF images from a segment of the vibracore VC01A with a top depth below the lakebed of approximately 289 cm and bottom depth of 439 cm.</procdesc>
