A three-dimensional groundwater flow model, constructed in MODFLOW-NWT, was developed to evaluate the groundwater flow system near Puget Sound, Pierce and King Counties, Washington. A steady-state model version was constructed to simulate equilibrium conditions, while a transient model version was constructed to simulate monthly variability from January 2005 to December 2015. The model was used to simulate several hydrologic scenarios. This data release contains the input and output files for the simulations described in the associated model documentation report (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20245026v2).
<purpose>This MODFLOW-NWT model was developed to simulate the groundwater flow system near Puget Sound, Pierce and King Counties, Washington. The development of the model input and output files included in this data release are documented in the U.S. Geologic Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2024-5026-D-E (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20245026v2)</purpose>
<supplinf>Support is provided for correcting errors in the data release and clarification of the modeling conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. Users are encouraged to review the model documentation report (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20245026v2) to understand the purpose, construction, and limitations of this model. The model will run successfully only if the original directory structure is correctly restored. The model archive is broken into several pieces to reduce the likelihood of download timeouts. Instructions for reconstructing the original directory structure and running the model included in this data release and described in the model documentation report can be found in the readme.txt ASCII file which can be downloaded as part of this data release.</supplinf>

<attraccr>The model was calibrated to measured values of water levels in wells and lakes and estimated baseflow for 25 streamgages. Hydraulic head values for 273 calibration targets were used for the transient model version, while the steady-state model version used 3992 hydraulic head calibration targets. The model also was calibrated to vertical hydraulic head differences at 616 calibration targets. The model was calibrated by a combination of a manual trial-and-error approach and automatic calibration using PEST.</attraccr>
