      <procstep>
<procdesc>A random set of spatial points were generated in ArcGIS within areas of chaparral vegetation in southern California, USA .

Aerial imagery corresponding to each point was then collected for a historical point in time between 1943 and 1959 and a present day point in time between 2016 and 2018.

Historical imagery was downloaded from the University of California Santa Barbara Map and Image
Library as tiff files that were then georeferenced using at least 10 points matching points and the spline
transformation.

The imagery for 2016-2018 was the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery, which can be
accessed from the ArcGIS online library.

The land cover data in this dataset was then generated by visually estimating various ground surface cover
types within a 30 meter radius around each random point from both the historical and present day images.

The land cover classes used included :
Woody vegetation
Rock
Bare ground and grass
Urban development (paved roads and structures considered to be permanent on the landscape)

The data were estimated into categories as follows:
0 - 0 percent
1 - 1-5 percent
2 - 6-25 percent
3 - 26-50 percent
4 - 51-75 percent
5 - 76-94 percent
6 - 95-100 percent

Human disturbance was also quantified using the categories above and the type of disturbance was
identified and included things such as pavement, structures, fuelbreaks, dirt roads, trails, reservoirs,
agriculture, etc.</procdesc>
