We used a database of all catalogued wildfire perimeters (Welty et al. 2017) to create a population of wildfires >100 ha in size that occurred from 2015-2016 in sagebrush ecological sites within the Great Basin. From this population, we randomly selected burned areas for field sampling across strata of R&R classes (High, Moderate, and Low; see Chambers et al. 2014) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Field Offices. This provided a sample of sites spanning biophysical and geographic gradients and represented 50% of all qualifying wildfires that occurred from 2015-2016. In each of these burned areas, between August-October 2017, field crews sampled sagebrush at 2-14 (average 8.52) randomly located, 13-m radius plots, or populations, for a total of 460. These can be treated as independent of one another, since populations at a given site were kilometers apart, could span wide climatic gradients, have different fire and disturbance histories, and could have different post-wildfire treatments applied to them. At each population, sagebrush seedling occupancy was characterized in combinations of: sagebrush species, suspected sagebrush seedling source (remnant, seeded, volunteer (i.e., from wild seed, not sown), unknown), and seedling microsite location (annual grass, topographic depression, drill row, fertile island created by a burned shrub, fertile island created by a burned tree, interspace between perennials, perennial grass, rock mulch, or soil crack). Potential sagebrush species were primarily big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.), but also included low sagebrush (Artemisia arbuscula Nutt.), and rarer occurrences of black sagebrush (Artemisia nova A. Nelson), silver sagebrush (Artemisia cana Pursh), and threetip sagebrush (Artemisia tripartita Rydb.). Crews also characterized the habitat and other plant species using ocular cover estimates across each 13-m plot, including the cover of: bare ground, fertile island microsites, litter, non-native annual grass, non-native forbs, native perennial grasses (NPG), native forbs, shrubs, and big sagebrush. These estimates were standardized through co-training of field technicians, use of visual aids representing each cover category at each plot (cover bins varied across functional groups), and multi-observer estimation at each plot. We quantified the distance (DISTANCE) from the plot center to the nearest remnant (i.e., fire surviving) big sagebrush, low sagebrush, and non-sagebrush shrub individuals out to a search radius of 200 m by having each observer walk in a zig-zag pattern with a meter tape starting from the plot center and working their way out to 200 m within their assigned quadrant. Since these plants tended to be older and larger than newly established shrubs, detection probability in the recently burned landscapes was relatively high, unless topographic elements obscured their view. In these cases, observers walked past the obscuring features to search for remnant shrubs. If a remnant shrub was visible from the 200 m mark or past it, the shrub’s distance past 200 m was estimated. If no shrubs were visible at the 200 m mark, a value of 250 m was assigned to the plot to facilitate subsequent data analyses. Categorical predictor variables assessed at each plot included burn severity (determined using fuel gages to assess 1 hr, 5 hr, 10 hr fuel classes remaining on shrub skeletons and by mortality of perennial bunchgrasses), soil surface (i.e., pedoderm) characteristics (e.g., soil crust type, perennial plant canopy gap sizes, erosion classes; Burkett et al. 2011), and soil compaction (e.g., loose, medium, compacted), plant vigor (e.g., green/rigid, brown/wilting), and cattle use (e.g., little/no impacts, moderate grazing/feces present, high grazing/feces present) classifications. We used naïve estimates of sagebrush seedling occupancy because our circular, 13-m radius plots were searched by two observers, both walking 3-4 concentric rings, with each searching for seedlings on both sides of each ring. The resulting search width was 1-2 m per pass, which led to high confidence in detection even in areas with high cheatgrass cover. We grouped all big sagebrush subspecies to the species-level due to difficulties with reliable identification of subspecies, especially in recently burned areas with small individuals and where mixing of subspecies occurs. We used the mid-points of binned, ocular cover estimates made at each population to produce quantitative predictor variables representing cover of plant functional groups mentioned above.
