This dataset contains the number of breeding pairs of bird species surveyed in all Cottonwood Lake Study Area wetlands.
<purpose>To annually record and monitor species and number of birds using the Cottonwood Lake Study Area wetlands for breeding/nesting and examine interannual changes in breeding bird species and numbers as a result of natural and human modified climate variability.</purpose>
<supplinf>This dataset is part of the Missouri Coteau Wetland Ecosystem Observatory that is a collection of abiotic and biotic data documenting biotic and abiotic responses to long-term climate and land-use change in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of the U.S. The PPR has a naturally dynamic climate that is characterized by extended wet and dry periods, and its wetlands have spatially variable hydrologic and biotic traits. The Cottonwood Lake Study Area in Stutsman County, North Dakota contains wetlands representative of multiple positions along a hydrologic continuum, from groundwater recharge to discharge. The extensive history of data collection in the Cottonwood Lakes Study Area provides a unique opportunity to assess the impact of climate variability on ecosystem health and productivity.</supplinf>

<methdesc>Each wetland in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area was surveyed for breeding-bird pairs. Surveys were conducted by teams of two or more. Teams walked the entire perimeter of the wetland. The surveys took place from late May until early June. Surveys were conducted over twelve consecutive days excluding Memorial Day and when weather was too severe (winds > 20mph, or constant rain). Data presented here are the maximum number of indicated pairs occurring for a minimum of three of the 12 survey days. Each day, surveys started 30 min before sunrise and continued until all wetlands were surveyed. All surveys were completed before 10 AM CDT. Breeding pairs were determined by visual identification of a male/female pair or, in the case of songbirds, also by auditory identification of a singing male (indication of established breeding territory). To help avoid double counting birds, only birds present when teams arrived at the wetland were counted, i.e., birds that flew in while teams were present were not counted, because it is possible that they may have flown from another already surveyed wetland.</methdesc>
