    <descript>
The data set contains location, depth, and geologic data from drill holes penetrating the Paleocene Fort Union Formation in the Williston Basin in Dunn County in western North Dakota.
      <purpose>The purpose of compiling this data is to provide refined correlations for lignite beds in the Paleocene Fort Union Formation. The refined correlations were compiled as part a study for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) showing the areal extent of potentially economic lignite and leonardite beds in the Williston Basin in North Dakota.</purpose>

      <procstep>
        <procdesc>The original drill hole data were uploaded from the National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) database (available at https://www.usgs.gov/centers/eersc/science/national-coal-resources-data-system-ncrds?qt-science_center_objects=0#qt-science_center_objects) into a geologic database in Carlson 2021 Mining (2021). Coal beds correlations were edited or modified, where necessary, in Carlson 2021 Mining, based on numerous geologic cross-sections constructed through the study area. The data were then downloaded from the Carlson 2021 Mining database into a formatted Excel spreadsheet. Strata names for lithologies are based on industry-standard Ferm codes (Ferm and Smith, ND). Coal bed thicknesses, cumulative coal thickness, and cumulative stripping ratios were calculated in the spreadsheet.</procdesc>
