      <abstract>We measured nesting rates and nesting success for a community of cavity-nesting bees across gradients of floral abundance, floral richness, and land-cover in the Prairie Pothole Region. Variables in this dataset include a unique transect identifier, a count of the occupied nests per transect, total floral species richness per transect, total floral stem abundance per transect, bee species richness, number of emerged adult bees per transect, and the proportion of those emerged bees which were female. In addition, there are land-cover measurements of the total area, in hectares, of grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands within 500m and 1500m of each transect. We binned land-covers from the 2019 National Agricultural Statistics Service Cropland Data Layer into our definitions of grasslands (Other Hay/Non Alfalfa, Sod/Grass Seed, Fallow/Idle Cropland, and Grassland/Pasture), wetlands (Woody Wetlands and Herbaceous Wetlands), and woodlands (Deciduous Forest, Evergreen Forest, and Shrubland).</abstract>
      <purpose>We were interested in studying how nest occupancy and nesting success of cavity-nesting bees were related to nests located near managed grassland, wetlands, and woodlands, as well as how the nearby floral resources may influence nesting metrics.         <procdesc>Using R as a Geographic Information System, we quantified the distribution of the land covers of interest (see attributes) within 500m and 1500m distances of each transect based on the 2019 Cropland Data Layer (CDL). We binned land-covers from the CDL which occurred in the 500m and 1500m distances together into categories of hectares grasslands (Other Hay/Non Alfalfa, Sod/Grass Seed, Fallow/Idle Cropland, and Grassland/Pasture), wetlands (Woody Wetlands and Herbaceous Wetlands), and woodlands (Deciduous Forest, Evergreen Forest, and Shrubland).</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Three times over the course of the summer in 2019, we identified flowering plants to species and quantified floral abundance, as number of floral stems, of each species for the transect. Because bee nest blocks were present at the transects throughout the summer (see below), our counts of floral stem abundance and richness are totaled per-transect for the entire season.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Bee nesting blocks were constructed out of untreated 4x4” Douglas-fir, to final dimensions of 12” tall, with 21 holes drilled approximately 3” deep and 3/8” in diameter. Within each hole we placed parchment paper, cut to size, to allow for removal of nests at the end of the season. Nest blocks were secured to t-posts with zip-ties at a height of approximately 1m, with cavity entrances facing south-east. Nesting blocks were deployed to each of the 48 transects in early summer 2019 (5/23/19 to 7/15/19), and allowed to remain there until late in the season when they were collected (8/21/19 to 10/9/19). Despite date variability, nest blocks remained at transects for a minimum of 2 months. After the third floral count, nesting blocks were removed from the field. Occupied parchment paper nests were counted, nests were then removed from nest blocks and placed into individual, vented plastic vials where they were overwintered in an uninsulated storage building. Nests not easily removed from their blocks were overwintered in their blocks in order to preserve the nest and decrease the chance that damage from handling may artificially decrease emergence success. Beginning in April 2020, we periodically checked nests for emerging adult bees. When emergence was first detected, nests were moved indoors to room temperature conditions (ca. 22° C) where they were checked approximately daily for emergence. Nesting tubes continued to be observed for emergence approximately daily until October 2020. We considered bee metrics at the transect level, recording the number of tubes occupied out of 21 possible in each nest block, the number of bees which emerged, the proportion of emerged bees which were female, as well as bee species richness. Emerged bees were captured, euthanized via cyanide kill-jars, and identified to species utilizing a combination of dichotomous keys as well as comparison with a reference collection.</procdesc>
