Geospatial datasets were developed to estimate the altitude of the top of bedrock, altitude of the top of the Paradox salt, altitude of the water table in the alluvial aquifer, and the thickness and extent of saturated alluvium in the Paradox Valley in western Colorado. This study was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation for modeling of brine discharge to the Dolores River (Heywood and others, 2024; Paschke and others, 2024). One point dataset and 11 surfaces (shapefiles or rasters) are published in this data release. The point dataset (Paradox_well_data.zip) contains water-level and geologic data for groundwater, observation, test, and production wells in the Paradox Valley compiled from several sources in 2010. Five of the surfaces (breccia_extent.zip, brsurface.zip, topbrcontour.zip, topsaltcontour.zip, and valley_alluvium.zip) were derived from published geologic maps and well logs and provide a hydrogeologic framework for the valley. The remaining six surfaces (alluvium_sat_bndy.zip, alluvium_sat_ci5m.zip, alt_wl_krig.zip, paa_sat.zip, wlalt_dwr_m.zip, and wlalt_ed_smooth.zip) were derived from the well dataset and mainly describe the thickness and extent of saturated alluvium in the valley floor. Details of how these geospatial datasets were created are provided in the 'process step' section of the metadata file associated with this data release. In addition to the geospatial datasets, this data release also includes a drilling report and results of several aquifer tests. The text file 'JensenBrineWell#2log.txt' contains the drilling report for Brine Well #2 from an unpublished report titled "Prospectus for Paradox Salt Company, Appendix F" by Jensen and Sorensen, Inc., 1959. The text file 'Specific_capacity_tests_pvu.txt' contains the results of 36 specific-capacity aquifer tests conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation between 1977 and 1984.
      <purpose>The geospatial datasets in this data release were developed to support conceptual (Paschke and others, 2024) and numerical (Heywood and others, 2024) models of groundwater flow and brine discharge to the Dolores River in the Paradox Valley, Colorado.</purpose>

    <attracc>
      <attraccr>Locations and altitudes of many water wells and of older abandoned oil-gas wells generally were reported to the center of 40-acre tracts and have maximum possible location errors of about 933 feet. When altitude of the land surface was not reported for a control point, the altitude was estimated using a 10-meter digital elevation model (USGS, 2021). Consequently, wells with poor location accuracy also have poor altitude accuracy. Because there is little recent groundwater-level data for the study area, except at the Paradox Valley Unit and the Piñon Ridge uranium-mill site, groundwater levels used in mapping the water-table surface included reported values from well-construction and test reports submitted to Colorado Division of Water Resources over a span of nearly 50 years. Consequently, groundwater-level measurements used in preparing this map are not contemporaneous, and the water-table surface and extent of the saturated alluvium are generalized.</attraccr>
    </attracc>
    <logic>Bedrock contours were reviewed to verify that values accurately represented well-log data, were within the expected range, and were consistent with the available geologic maps. Water-level contours were reviewed to verify that values represented the water-level data, were within the expected range, and were consistent with the land-surface altitude. The extent of the saturated alluvium was reviewed to verify that it was consistent with published geologic maps, water-level data, topography, and areas of irrigated land in the valley.</logic>

        <procdesc>Compilation of well dataset:
To compile the dataset Paradox_well_data.zip, well construction and test reports and locations for permitted wells were compiled from the Colorado Division of Water Resources on-line well-permit database (Colorado Division of Water Resources, 2010). Locations, drilling reports, and geophysical logs of oil and gas test wells in and near the Paradox Valley were retrieved from the Colorado Oil and Gas Information System (Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, 2010). Documents, reports, and data collected during planning, testing, and operation of the Paradox Valley Unit (PVU) were supplied by the Bureau of Reclamation (Bureau of Reclamation, 2010). Well-construction, groundwater levels, and water-quality data for groundwater sites in and near the study area also were retrieved from the USGS National Water Information System database (USGS, 2010). Altitude in feet referenced to the NAVD88 for the top of bedrock, top of salt, and bottom of the alluvium were computed based on the well-log information and added as attributes to the shapefile.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Steps in creating hydrogeologic datasets:
The aerial extent of the alluvial cover on the floor of the Paradox Valley (valley_alluvium.zip) was prepared using the Esri ArcMap software version 6.2, Build 9200 (Esri, 2010). Spatial geologic data from Day and others (1999) was used to compile a polygon of bedrock formations surrounding the valley, which provided a mask for generating a new polygon representing the extent of alluvial cover on the floor of the Paradox Valley (valley_alluvium.zip).

A raster representing the altitude of the top of bedrock (brsurface.zip) was created using the Alt_Br altitude points in Paradox_well_data.zip with the valley_alluvium.zip as a boundary. The raster was generated in ArcGIS using the 'Topo to Raster' tool in the Spatial Analyst package. The raster surface was contoured using the 'contour' tool in Spatial Analyst to create the contour map topbrcontour.zip. Some manual edits were made to the contours to match boundaries and honor data points.

The surface breccia_extent.zip represents the extent of brecciated caprock under the alluvial aquifer adjacent to the Dolores River. The surface was delineated by extracting the 1,500-meter (4,920-foot) contour from topbrcontour.zip and converting the line to a polygon. The altitude of 1,500 meters was selected because well logs for many of the PVU production wells indicate the altitude at the top of the breccia is the range of 1,480 to 1,490 meters above NAVD88 (Bureau of Reclamation, 2010).

The dataset topsaltcontour.zip is a structural contour map of the top of the salt in the Paradox Formation. It was digitized from a paper map by Elston and Shoemaker (1961) and recontoured to change the contour interval from 1,000 to 250 feet.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Steps in creating alluvial aquifer datasets:
Colorado Division of Water Resources water-level data compiled in Paradox_well_data.zip were contoured using kriging in ArcMap to produce a contour map of the water-table surface (alt_wl_krig.zip). Some manual edits and smoothing were made to match boundaries and honor data points. Using ArcGIS tools in Spatial Analyst (Esri, 2010), the contour map was converted to a raster (wlalt_dwr_m.zip) representing the water-table altitude in meters NAVD88. The bedrock surface (brsurface.zip) was converted to meters then subtracted from the water-table surface using the raster calculator in ArcGIS to generate a raster representing the thickness of the saturated alluvium (paa_sat.zip). This surface was then contoured in ArcGIS to produce alluvium_sat_ci5m.zip, which is a contour map of the thickness of the saturated alluvium with 5-meter contours. The extent of the saturated alluvium (alluvial_sat_bndy.zip) was created by extracting the 0-meter contour from alluvium_sat_ci5m.zip, smoothing the line, and converting it to a polygon. The water-table surface was further refined by clipping it to the boundary of saturated alluvium (alluvial_sat_bndy.zip) and increasing the contour interval to 10 feet (3.05 meters) yielding the dataset wlalt_ed_smooth.zip.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Specific capacity aquifer tests:
The Bureau of Reclamation conducted 36 specific capacity aquifer tests at 21 well sites between 1977 and 1984. The static water level (swl), final pumping water level (pwl), sustained yield (Q), length of test (t), and depth to bedrock for each test were obtained from the well permits, which are available from the Colorado Division of Water Resources (CODWR) on-line well-permit database (Colorado Division of Water Resources, 2010) using the CODWR permit number. The following properties were computed from the published test data based on equations from Fetter (1994):

1. Drawdown (s) in feet:  s = pwl - swl
2. Specific capacity (Q/s) in cubic feet per day per foot of drawdown:  Q/s = Q ÷ s * 1440 ÷ 7.48
3. Saturated thickness (bo) in feet: bo = depth to bedrock - swl
4. Corrected drawdown (s') in feet:  s' = s - (s*s ÷ 2*bo)
5. Transmissivity derived from specific capacity (Tsc) in cubic feet per day per foot of drawdown: Tsc = Q ÷ s' * 1440 ÷ 7.48
6. Hydraulic conductivity derived from specific capacity (Ksc) in cubic feet per day per foot of drawdown per foot of saturated thickness: Ksc = Q ÷ s ÷ b</procdesc>
