This shapefile contains polygons that describe structures prospective for petroleum in northern Afghanistan compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey, Central Energy Resources team from different original sources.
      <purpose>Identified prospective structures of Afghanistan indicate where historical petroleum exploration efforts have occurred in Afghanistan and where the greatest prospectivity exists at present.</purpose>
      <supplinf>As part of the U.S. Government's effort to aid in reconstructing Afghanistan's economy and infrastructure, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is cooperating with the Afghanistan Ministry of Mines and Industry (AMMI) to assess the undiscovered petroleum (includes crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids/condensates) resources of Afghanistan. Funding for this effort was provided by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).</supplinf>

    <attracc>
      <attraccr>Attribute accuracy is dependent upon accuracy of source materials. Names used in this data set are the result of an iterative process of verification and normalization. Most of the source materials use names transliterated into the Russian Cyrillic alphabet from Dari and other Afghan languages written with modified Farsi Arabic script. This introduced some inconsistencies because of limitations with Cyrillic and Russian usage, eg. "Herat" becomes "Gerat." In transliterating from the Russian Cyrillic alphabet to the Roman alphabet, USGS attempted to render the names phonetically and to adhere to common principles of English usage in spelling words of Afghan origin, eg. Russian "Dzhuma" is here given as "Juma" in the attribute item "USGS_name." Amir Mohammad Selab of the Afghanistan Ministry of Mines and Industry Joint Oil and Gas Resource Assessment Team was consulted to decide final English spelling of the identified drilled structures. A more direct transliteration from Russian in a form sometimes found in the literature is found in the attribute item "Alt_name." Tectonic zones digitized from the Klochko map were labeled with Roman numerals for major divisions and small letters for minor divisions. Because the order of letters is different in the Roman and Russian Cyrillic alphabets the tectonic zone labels are given in both orders. The item "Tzone_eng" gives the subdivisions in Roman alphabetic order - (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h). The item "Tzone_rus" gives the subdivisions in transliterated Russian Cyrillic alphabetic order - (a,b,v,g,d,e,zh,z).</attraccr>

      <horizpa>
        <horizpar>Scanned images of the original source maps presented numerous challenges in registration with basemap data. Afghanistan Information Management Service (AIMS) international boundaries and cities were used as registration points. Challenges were posed by uncertainty as to the projection of the original map and by systematic distortion of the base map used in compilation of the original map by Soviet cartographers for security reasons. Additionally, the poor condition of the original source maps, caused by folding and storage in a wet and rodent infested hiding place during the political upheaval in Afghanistan, created other difficulties. The damage includes tears, ripples, water staining and gnawing by rodents. For the Klochko and Slobodyanyuk map, the registration points were projected to an Equidistant Conic projection with reasonable parameters for this area and a Pulkovo 1942 datum commonly used on Soviet era maps. The image was scanned with a resolution of 200 dots per inch (0.13 mm), equivalent to 63 meters at a scale of 1:500,000. It was registered with a software (ArcMap) calculated RMS of 194 meters. Sampling differences between the rectified image and the NIMA reference points yielded an observed RMS of 2226 meters. The resulting accuracy falls below U.S.national map accuracy standards (254 meters at a scale of 1:500,000) by a factor of 8.76. For the Les'kiv map, the registration points were projected to a Gauss-Kruger projection (zone 11) and a Pulkovo 1942 datum commonly used on Soviet era maps. (A Herat North datum was tested, but found to be less consistent with the map than the Pulkovo 1942 datum.) The image was scanned with a resolution of 200 dots per inch (0.13 mm), equivalent to 12.6 meters at a scale of 1:100,000. It was registered with a software (ArcMap) calculated RMS of 49 meters. Sampling differences between the rectified image and the NIMA reference points yielded an observed RMS of 368 meters. The resulting accuracy falls below U.S.national map accuracy standards (254 meters at a scale of 1:500,000) by a factor of 1.45. In the Sheberghan - Sari Pul region of known hydrocarbon resources, the structures on the Les'kiv map were preferred. The positional accuracy of this data set varies as to the original source map of the features. The positional accuracy value given for these data is that of the Klochko Slobodyanyuk map. Users are advised that these data do not meet U.S.G.S. standards</horizpar>
