    <descript>
This shapefile contains polylines that describe the location of seismic lines in northern Afghanistan for which digital seismic profiles in seg-y format are available from the Afghanistan Ministry of Mines and Industry Joint Oil and Gas Resource Assessment Team.
      <purpose>The location of seismic lines indicates where historic exploration activity has taken place and where data is available. This shapefile is configured to allow hyperlinks between seismic lines in an ArcReader project and graphic images of the seismic profile for each seismic line.</purpose>
      <supplinf>As part of the U.S. Government's effort to aid in reconstructing Afghanistan's economy and infrastructure, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is cooperating with the Afghanistan Ministry of Mines and Industry (AMMI) to assess the undiscovered petroleum (includes crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids/condensates) resources of Afghanistan. Funding for this effort was provided by the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).</supplinf>

        <horizpar>Challenges were posed to registration of the scanned image of the original source map by uncertainty as to the projection of the original map and by systematic distortion of the base map used in compilation of the original map by Soviet cartographers for security reasons. Several well locations that had been surveyed with hand held GPS were available. These were used as registration points. The registration points were projected to Gauss-Krueger zone 11 projection with a transformation parameter to account for distortion by Soviet cartographers and a Pulkovo 1942 datum commonly used on Soviet era maps. The image was scanned with a resolution of 200 dots per inch (0.13 mm), equivalent to 12.6 meters at a scale of 1:100,000. It was registered with a software (ArcMap) calculated RMS of 27.5 meters. Sampling differences between the rectified image and the NIMA reference points yielded an observed RMS of 40.9 meters. The resulting data complies U.S. national map accuracy standards (50.8 meters at a scale of 1:100,000).</horizpar>
