This data set is an amalgamation of twenty-nine original data sets, which represent amphibian surveys in the seven national parks comprising the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN) of the National Park Service. The data were collected from 1984-2005, and include the localities of 19 species of amphibians at various life stages, 18 native to the Pacific Northwest and one invasive species.
<purpose>In order to access comprehensive information about amphibians in the parks, the NCCN desired to consolidate disparate amphibian survey data sets into one database.</purpose>

<procdesc>Data were kept in their original form when possible, but in some circumstances it was necessary to alter the values for the consolidated version. The most common occurrence of this was when a source database listed one species detection at one location, but included multiple life stages and counts. For example, a Rana cascadae detection at a single site might be recorded as “T, A” with a species count of 20. This indicated that a total of 20 tadpoles and adults were found but these stages were combined into one record. The consolidated database that we created stores each stage as a separate record. In this situation, we duplicated the site record with the first record indicating a detection of “T” and the second record indicating a detection of “A”. Because of our inability to then distinguish the count of tadpoles from the count of adults, we changed the count values to “<20?” for both species records.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Minor re-formatting was applied to the source data. Year-only dates were moved to the “notes” field so that full dates could be sorted properly, elevational data provided in feet were converted to meters, and township-range-section coordinates were converted to UTMs at http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html (and therefore are only estimates and not exact locations). We excluded records containing ambiguous or questionable species codes and references to non-amphibians, and standardized the spelling of common names and life stages.</procdesc>
