    <descript>
The Grand Calumet River is located east of Chicago, Illinois and flows east to west across the Indiana-Illinois border to its confluence with the Little Calumet River. In 2017, a suite of water level, temperature, and bathymetric data were collected along the Grand Calumet River. Water level and water temperature were continuously monitored at five locations in the Grand Calumet River between late February and early November 2017, using Van Essen Mini-Diver DI 501 dataloggers (herein referred to as "Mini-Divers"). The Mini-Divers are submersible instruments with sensors for measuring and recording water pressure and temperature. Atmospheric pressure in the area was continuously monitored during this time period using a Van Essen Baro-Diver pressure transducer. The water pressure data from the Mini-Divers were compensated for variations in atmospheric pressure and converted to water levels.
      <purpose>The water level data were collected to examine the water surface profile of the Grand Calumet River under different flow conditions and for use in processing bathymetric data from the same study area.</purpose>

        <procdesc>DATA COLLECTION:
On February 27 and 28, 2017, Mini-Diver DI 501 dataloggers were deployed at five locations on the Grand Calumet River. The Mini-Divers were programmed to measure pressure and temperature every five minutes. The Mini-Divers were attached to 10-foot fence posts that were driven about halfway into the bed of the river and capped with a 1-inch aluminum pipe. Installation locations were near the bridges at Torrence Avenue, Columbia Drive, Indianapolis Boulevard, Kennedy Avenue, and Cline Avenue. The top of the aluminum pipe was surveyed using an RTK-GPS for 30 minutes for all locations except Kennedy Avenue. At Kennedy Avenue, a reference mark near the aluminum pipe was surveyed instead. At each site, tapedown measurements were made from the top of the pipe to the water surface and to the Mini-Diver measuring point. At the Kennedy Avenue site, an additional tapedown measurement was made from the reference mark to the top of the pipe. These measurements were used to determine the elevation of each Mini-Diver above the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). A Baro-Diver was deployed near the gage house at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgaging station 05536357 GRAND CALUMET RIVER AT HOHMAN AV AT HAMMOND, IN.</procdesc>

Data were downloaded from the Mini-Divers and the Baro-Diver on April 24, 2017, July 12, 2017, September 7, 2017, and November 7, 2017. Short periods of time may be missing from the water level and temperature records during the period the data was being downloaded. <procdesc>BAROMETRIC COMPENSATION:
The Mini-Diver and Baro-Diver data were imported into Diver-Office version 2017.2 software. The barometric compensation process in Diver-Office was applied to the 5-minute pressure data recorded by the Mini-Divers. The water temperature and the water column height above the Mini-Diver was exported for each measurement location as a comma-separated values (CSV) file.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>COMPUTATION OF WATER SURFACE ELEVATION:
The water surface elevation above NAVD 88 (also referred to as "water level") was computed in Microsoft Excel by adding the water column height above the Mini-Diver to the elevation of the Mini-Diver. A table of the water level and water temperature at each time step was saved as a CSV file for each measurement location.</procdesc>
