The GIS shapefile and summary tables provide irrigated agricultural land-use for Hendry and Palm Beach Counties, Florida through a cooperative project between the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), Office of Agricultural Water Policy. Information provided in the shapefile includes the location of irrigated land field verified for 2019, crop type, irrigation system type, and primary water source used in Hendry and Palm Beach Counties, Florida. A map image of the shapefile is provided in the attachment.
<purpose>The data release provides a detailed digital field verified shapefile of irrigated agricultural land-use within Hendry and Palm Beach Counties, Florida and a table summarizing the results for each county between January and October 2019. The land-use shapefile and acreage tables produced for this study will be compared to the Florida Statewide Agricultural Irrigation Demand (FSAID) Irrigated Lands Geodatabase (IGL), version VI (The Balmoral Group, 2019) totals for Hendry and Palm Beach Counties. Field-verified data on crop type, irrigated lands, and acreage summaries provide FDACS a more accurate basis for estimating current and future water demands. Details on the procedures and methodologies used for mapping and field verification in Hendry and Palm Beach Counties can be found in Marella and others (2020). <attraccr>The field verification was conducted beginning in January 2019 and concluded in October 2019. Each field with an irrigation system or a withdrawal permit was observed from the road at least once during the study period. Upon completion of the field verification, a draft map was produced. This draft map was reviewed by FDACS and The Balmoral Group to help identify any missing fields. After changes were made and questions resolved, the results of the all field verified data were totaled and summarized.</attraccr>

<procdesc>Using the Florida Statewide Agricultural Irrigation Demand (FSAID) agricultural irrigated lands (ILG) map (versions V and VI) as a starting point, numerous other data sources and layers were added to create a preliminary map of irrigated crops in Hendry and Palm Beach Counties. These additional data included a point layer of the current agricultural irrigation consumptive water-use permits (CUP) issued by the Southwest Florida Water Management District along with a shapefile with each permit property boundary. The locations of the District’s CUPs (for both wells and surface-water intakes), and the permit property boundary associated with each withdrawal point, helped identify fields that not have been mapped on the original FSAID map. Additional fields were added to the preliminary map by digitizing at the 1:5,000 reference scale when evidence of irrigation equipment was visible from ESRI's ArcGIS Online World Imagery base map and Google Earth imagery. Field visits were made by USGS staff to Hendry and Palm Beach Counties between January 2019 and December 2019 to visually observe all potential irrigated fields. Attribute data were collected for each irrigated field including a general or specific crop type, irrigation system type, and primary water source (if visibly able to confirm). The field maps were then modified and corrected based on field observations, and revised map was created. This newly created map was presented to FDACS and The Balmoral Group for review and comments. Once their concerns were addressed and modifications made, a final shapefile was prepared. From this final shapefile, summary files Table_Hendry_County and Table_PalmBeach_County were created for each county.</procdesc>
