This metadata record describes estimates of public supply water withdrawals for 2010, weighted by the population served in 2013. Data were compiled for two spatial components of the NHDPlus version 2 data suite (NHDPlusv2) for the conterminous United States; 1) individual reach catchments and 2) reach catchments accumulated upstream through the river network. This dataset can be linked to the NHDPlus version 2 data suite by the unique identifier COMID. Reach catchment information characterizes data at the local scale. Reach catchments accumulated upstream through the river network characterizes cumulative upstream conditions. Network-accumulated values are computed using two methods, 1) divergence-routed and 2) total cumulative drainage area. Both approaches use a modified routing database to navigate the NHDPlus reach network to aggregate (accumulate) the metrics derived from the reach catchment scale. (Schwarz and Wieczorek, 2018).
<purpose>This dataset was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project in support of USGS SPARROW modeling (SPAtially Referenced Regressions On Watershed attributes). The dataset also can be useful for other applications such as national or regional watershed characterizations and modeling.</purpose>
<supplinf>Population served is reported by permit and not by an individual site, so the number of people served were allocated to each site equally. For example, if 3,000 people were served by 15 sites, then each site would be serving 200 people in these data. The values were then summed by catchment.

<procdesc>2013 population served by surface water and groundwater categorized by NHDPlus V2 catchment, facility ID, and FIPS were used in conjunction with 2010 county public supply withdrawal data to compute Public Supply Withdrawal values (MGD) by surface and groundwater (LaMotte, 2019 in Wieczorek and others, 2018)

Population served data from SDWIS (EPA and USGS) based on facility point data. Facility points were overlaid on counties and catchments. Population served values are by facility ID, not by individual point location. When multiple points with the same Facility ID (FAID) were encountered, the population served (which represents the population the facility serves, reported by the water supplier) was split equally among the points with the same facility ID. Population served by county were summed. Population served by COMID and County were summed. A ratio of population served by COMID to total county population served was computed. This ratio was multiplied by the county public supply withdrawal data the point resides in, then summed by COMID.</procdesc>
