In 2013 and 2014, standardized electrofishing was conducted above and below Lock and Dam 19 (i.e., in Pools 19 and 20 respectively) of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). Sampling was consistent with the UMR Restoration program’s Long Term Resource Monitoring element (LTRM) and The Illinois Natural History Survey’s Long Term Electrofishing program (LTEF) allowing for standardized comparisons among the reaches we sampled and those sampled by the LTRM (Pools 4, 8, 13, and 26) and LTEF (Pools 16-21, and Pool 25). Data in this file is includes A) new data from Pools 19 and 20 and B) data compiled from public sources for other pools (LTRM and LTEF). Generally, data codes are intended to match formatting conventions from these public data repositories.
<purpose>To determine the potential influence of Dam 19 on fish communities system-wide. Dam 19 has a significant hydraulic head (~10 m) that creates the largest impoundment on the system and a barrier to upstream migration for fishes, restricting all passage to the lock chamber. We used the Bray-Curtis Dissimilarity index and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) to identify variation in relative abundance of fishes among pools and a linear regression model with a Bayesian framework to relate Bray-Curtis dissimilarity to distance. Our results showed a strong relationship between distance and dissimilarity suggesting little evidence Lock and Dam 19 largely influences fish communities.</purpose>
<supplinf>Fish were collected at three discrete time intervals: time period 1: 15 June to 31 July, time period 2: 1 August to 15 September, time period 3: 16 September to 31 October of 2013 and 2014.</supplinf>

        <procdesc>Study Sites
Pool 19 is the longest pool in the UMR (74.5 km of total 1070 km) and is geomorphically diverse. The lower half of the pool is characterized by great width (over 2.5 km below Fort Madison, Iowa), lacustrine conditions, low current velocities, static water levels, and extensive (6,800 hectares) shallow-water areas with floating-leaf vegetation. The upper portion of the pool is riverine with extensive side channels and shallow backwaters. This diverse geomorphology and floating-leaf vegetation in Pool 19 results in diverse habitat for river flora and fauna. Pool 20 (35.2 km) is characterized as straight, narrow, and riverine with high current velocities, lotic conditions, sparse vegetation, and limited off-channel or lacustrine habitat for river flora and fauna. Proportionately, Pool 20 consists of mostly main channel (80.4%), followed by side channels (19%), and a small percentage of backwaters (0.6%). Pool 19 has less main channel (29.3%), and side channels (17.4%), than Pool 20, and more backwaters (5.6%), and impounded habitat (47.7%; Fig 1, Table 1). We randomly selected sample sites in Pools 19 and 20 from two habitat types: main channels and side channels (Fig 1) according to LTRM procedures (Gutreuter et al. 1995). We selected habitat types based on aquatic areas designated by Wilcox (1993). The main channel conveys the majority of the river discharge and in most reaches includes the navigation channel. Side channels are large channels that carry less flow than the main channel.
The LTRM fish monitoring uses a random sampling design stratified by aquatic area types (Wilcox 1993). Primary and secondary sites were randomly selected from a GIS database. Sampling sites by habitat in Pool 19 and Pool 20 were indexed and referenced by Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. Inaccessible areas, including those with private or no physical access were omitted from the sampling frame. Secondary sample sites were used if sampling gear was unable to be deployed at the primary site due to insufficient water depth or obstructions.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Data Collection
Fish collection methodology generally followed Gutreuter et al. (1995). Fish were collected at three discrete time intervals: time period 1: 15 June to 31 July, time period 2: 1 August to 15 September, time period 3: 16 September to 31 October of 2013 and 2014. Pulse DC boat daytime electroshocking was used to sample fish using LTRM standardized electrofishing procedures. Power goals from the electrofishing boat and sampling design emulated LTRM protocols to achieve comparable fish catch rates and standardization across all pools in the UMR.
We compared Pools 19 and 20 fish assemblages to four LTRM regional trend areas: Pools 4, 8, 13, and 26 utilizing main channel and side channel habitats (2013, 2014) and LTEF sampled pools: Pools 16 to 21, and Pool 25 utilizing main channel habitats (2014). Solely main channel habitats were utilized because LTEF samples only main channel sites as per their sampling protocol (Fritts, 2017). Main channel site selection is allocated on a reach specific basis for both LTEF (one main channel site per every 8.1 river kilometers for any given reach) and LTRM (based on the proportion of main channel habitat for any given reach). Regional trend area electrofishing data was obtained from the LTRM online database (http://www.umesc.usgs.gov/data_library/fisheries/fish_page.html). Long Term Electrofishing data was obtained from the Illinois Natural History Survey personnel.</procdesc>
