    <descript>
This dataset, created in support of USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2020-5075, Estimates of Groundwater Discharge by Evapotranspiration, Stump Spring and Hiko Springs, Clark County, Nevada, 2016-18, represents a two class land cover classification consisting of moderate to dense vegetation and bare to sparsely vegetated areas within the Groundwater Discharge Area and Area of Critical Environmental Concern boundaries for Stump Spring, Nevada. The classification is based on a 2015 1-meter National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) image and a maximum likelihood classification algorithm provided in ENVI software (https://www.harrisgeospatial.com/docs/Classification.html#ClassSupervised).
      <purpose>This dataset was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey study, done in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, to estimate annual groundwater evapotranspiration from riparian vegetation in two spring areas in southern Nevada. The intended uses of this dataset include, but are not limited to, natural resource modeling, mapping, and visualization applications.</purpose>

        <procdesc>A four-band NAIP image from 2015 was passed through the supervised classification workflow using ENVI software. The algorithm used training data for four classes (bare ground, road, shadow, vegetation) collected directly from the image. Bare ground training sites included areas of bare ground and sparse vegetation. The shadow class included areas of shadow adjacent to large mesquite. The training data were passed through a maximum likelihood classifier with no probability threshold defined. The resulting classification was refined using the internal classification "cleanup" process with no smoothing and a 3-pixel aggregation threshold to clean up "speckle" and "noise" in the classification.</procdesc>
