Smelter slag, containing copper and other trace elements, is widespread in riverbed sediments in the Upper Columbia River near Kettle Falls, WA. To evaluate the potential risk to aquatic life, concentrations of copper and other trace elements were measured in the shallow pore and surface water collected near the sediment-water interface. An in situ pore-water profiler was used to collect a suite of four water samples from above, at, and below the sediment-water interface at each of 11 sampling locations. Samples were collected between July 19-21, 2017. The analysis of water samples included specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, dissolved organic carbon, and a suite of major anions, cations, and trace elements.
<purpose>The benthos is an important habitat in river ecosystems for many organisms. This habitat has chemical concentrations not represented by samples from the overlying water column, thus organism at the sediment-water interface experience different chemical exposure risks. To obtain data relevant to these benthic organisms, specifically early-life stage White Sturgeon, the U.S. Geological Survey measured aqueous concentrations of trace elements in pore and surface water near the sediment-water interface at 11 locations in the in the Upper Columbia River near Kettle Falls, WA. Chemical concentration data representative of in situ conditions at the sediment-water interface are necessary to evaluate potential injury to sturgeon fry that utilize this area as habitat.</purpose>

<attraccr>To identify potential bias and variability in the data generated, quality assurance (QA) and control (QC) procedures were used both in the field and in the analytical laboratory. A combination of blanks, replicate samples and standard reference samples were submitted in double-blind format along with the environmental samples. Reference standards contained aqueous concentrations of the targeted trace metals that were similar to reported concentrations observed in the Upper Columbia River. Reference standards were acquired from the USGS Quality Systems Branch (http://bqs.usgs.gov/srs/index.html). The primary trace element of concern was copper; results of analysis of field QC samples showed no indications of bias from contamination of blank samples or excessive variation in results of analysis of reference samples. Because QC samples (duplicates, field spikes, and blanks) were within acceptable levels, no changes to environmental data were made. Future use of this data in interpretive reports should consider if QC targets where acceptable for their purpose, thus QC sample results are included with this dataset.</attraccr>

<procdesc>Samples of shallow pore-water and surface water from near the sediment-water interface were collected from the riverine portion of the Upper Columbia River for measurements of aqueous trace elements concentrations. Samples were collected using non-traditional procedures to account for environmental conditions that included deep swiftly flowing water and riverbed sediments composed of sand to boulder sized particles. Samples were collected following basic non-contaminating sampling and decontamination guidelines described in USGS National Field Manual (http://water.usgs.gov/owq/FieldManual/), including acid-cleaned Teflon or high-density polyethylene sampling equipment as feasible. A weighted (150 pound) pore-water profile sampler was used to collect a series of 3 to 4 60 milliliter samples in a vertical profile across the sediment water interface at location of deep swift river flow. The profile used 4 individual 60 milliliter syringes to collected discrete samples from four location in a vertical profile including:14.5 and 4.5 cm below the sediment water interface, at the sediment water interface and 7 cm above the sediment water interface. Each sample was collected in an individual syringe that was triple rinsed with native water before sample collection. The profile sampler was used to collect profiles at all 10 locations.</procdesc>

<procdesc>Water samples were processed at a field laboratory on the same day as they were collected for determination of alkalinity, conductivity, and pH. Measurements were generally competed within 4 hours of sample collection (although in several instances field processing required 6 hours to complete). The general methodology followed that described in USGS National Field Manual for the Collection of Water-Quality Data (U.S. Geological Survey, variously dated; http://water.usgs.gov/owq/FieldManual/ ) as modified for limited sample size. Conductivity was measured with an WTW Series 3100 Meter with a Microelectrodes MI-905 conductivity probe. Alkalinity and pH were measured with an Orion EA940 Expandable Ion Analyzer, Orion 917001 ATC probe, and Orion 8165BN combination pH probe. Samples were filtered with disposable 0.45 micron nylon filters and cation and metals samples were acidified to a pH of less than 2 with nitric acid. Samples for dissolved organic carbon were filtered with disposable 0.7 micron glass fiber filters and chilled prior to laboratory analysis.</procdesc>
