These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), major anions (chloride, nitrite+nitrate as nitrogen, sulfate, etc.), dissolved organic carbon, and general water quality characteristics in Canyon Mine containment pond water samples collected in calendar year 2018.
These results are part of an ongoing study on the temporal variation in chemistry of the containment pond at Canyon Uranium Mine, near Tusayan, Arizona USA. Results are reflective of pond conditions at the time of collection.

Quality control measures included the use of NIST-traceable calibration standards, second source and/or laboratory control standards, analysis duplicates and spikes, and calibrated balances and pipets.
The data were checked for omissions and duplicates. All values fall within expected ranges.
Data set is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted
No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted
Containment pond water was collected as grab samples and analysed for elements (Al, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, Tl, Pb, Bi, Th, U), major ions (fluoride, chloride, nitrite+nitrate as nitrogen, bromide, sulfate, phosphate, Na, Mg, K, Ca, Mn, Sr), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and general water quality parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, total alkalinity, total hardness, and total ammonia). Select samples were analzyed both unfiltered and filtered. Filtered samples were syringe-filtered through a 0.45 µm polyethersulfone (PES) membrane into a pre-cleaned bottle. Established laboratory quality assurance/quality control procedures and sample types, including laboratory spikes, duplicates, and reference materials, were used to verify instrument performance, accuracy, and precision throughout all analyses.
2018
Samples for analysis of elements and major cations were acidified to 2% (v/v) nitric acid for preservation. Additionally, the samples for major cation analysis were filtered through a built-in 20 µm filter cap on sample vials to prevent column fouling. The samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The ICP-MS method was similar to USEPA method 6020B (ICP-MS analysis: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 2014. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, Method 6020B.) The ICP-MS was equipped with an autosampler/autodilutor with online addition of an internal standard solution. A minimum of three external National Institute of Standards and Technology-traceable calibration standards plus a calibration blank were used to calibrate the instrument response.
2018
Samples for analysis of anion concentrations were filtered through a built-in 20 µm filter cap on sample vials to prevent column fouling. Anion concentrations were measured using an ion chromatography system equipped with a conductivity detector; this method is similar to USEPA 9056A (Anion analysis: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 2007. Determination of Inorganic Anions by Ion Chromatography, Method 9056A). All anion samples were kept refrigerated until analysis; samples were held for up to 30 days prior to analysis.
2018
Samples for DOC analyses were vacuum or syringe-filtered through a 0.45 µm PES membrane, acidified to pH less than 2 using high purity sulfuric acid, and refrigerated for preservation prior to analysis using total organic carbon analyzer. Samples for DOC analyses were held for up to 28 days prior to analysis. The DOC concentrations were measured as non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) by high temperature catalytic oxidation-nondispersive infrared spectroscopy using a total organic carbon analyzer. This method was similar to USEPA 415.3 (DOC analysis: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 2003. Determination of total organic carbon and specific UV absorbance at 254nm in source water and drinking water, Method 415.3). The DOC samples were air-sparged to remove inorganic carbon species prior to analysis.
2018
General water quality parameters were measured using a Hach multimeter (model HQ440D), with the exception of hardness, which was measured using an EDTA titration with colorimetric endpoint (with Eriochrome Black T as indicator).
