https://doi.org/10.5066/P9GD4MV2
These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), carbon, and particle size determination in Canyon Mine containment pond sediment samples collected in calendar year 2018.
These results are part of an ongoing study on the temporal variation in chemistry of the containment pond at Canyon Uranium Mine, near Tusayan, Arizona USA. Results are reflective of pond conditions at the time of collection.

Quality control measures included the use of NIST-traceable calibration standards, second source and/or laboratory control standards, analysis duplicates and spikes, and calibrated balances and pipets.
The data were checked for omissions and duplicates. All values fall within expected ranges.
Data set is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted

Sediment samples were collected using a plastic scoop, sieved to less than 2 mm particle size, lyophilized, and homogenized. Sediments were microwave digested in nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide, using a method similar to USEPA 3050B (Acid digestion: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 1996. Acid Digestion of Sediments, Sludges, and Soils, Method 3050B).
2018
The processed sediment samples were then analyzed for metals (Al, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, Tl, Pb, Bi, Th, U) using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The ICP-MS method was similar to USEPA method 6020B (ICP-MS analysis: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 2014. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, Method 6020B.) The ICP-MS was equipped with an autosampler/autodilutor with online addition of an internal standard solution.
2018
Mercury was analyzed by direct mercury analyzer using a method similar to USEPA 7473 (Mercury analysis: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 1998. Mercury in Solids and Solutions by Thermal Decomposition, Amalgamation, and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Method 7473). A minimum of three external National Institute of Standards and Technology-traceable calibration standards plus a calibration blank were used to calibrate the instrument response. Established laboratory quality assurance/quality control procedures and sample types, including laboratory spikes, duplicates, and reference materials, were used to verify instrument performance, accuracy, and precision throughout all analyses.
2018
Analyses of total carbon, total inorganic carbon, and total organic carbon were sub-contracted by USGS-CERC to the University of Missouri Soil Health Assessment Center (MU-SHAC). Lyophilized sediment portions (less than 2 mm) were transferred to MU-SHAC. Carbon analyses were performed according to the USDA Kellogg Soil Survey Laboratory Methods Manual. Total carbon and total organic carbon were determined using a modified version of Method 4H2 (Dry Combustion), with total inorganic carbon being the difference between total carbon and total organic carbon. Results and information regarding MU-SHAC QA/QC, if performed, were not provided in the final report transmitted to USGS-CERC. The accuracy, precision, and other quality characteristics of the MU-SHAC results have not been verified by USGS-CERC.

Sediment textural classification and particle size determinations (PSD) was sub-contracted by USGS-CERC to the University of Missouri Soil Health Assessment Center (MU-SHAC). Lyophilized sediment portions (less than 2 mm) were transferred to MU-SHAC. The MU-SHAC performed particle size determinations according to the USDA Kellogg Soil Survey Laboratory Methods Manual, Method 3A1a. Results and information regarding MU-SHAC QA/QC, if performed, were not provided in the final report transmitted to USGS-CERC. The accuracy, precision, and other quality characteristics of the MU-SHAC results have not been verified by USGS-CERC.
