The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been engaged in airborne electromagnetics (AEM) since the 1970s, playing a role in the development of early acquisition systems, developing calibration methods, refining standards for data acquisition, improving data processing, modeling, and interpretation methods, and expanding the range of AEM applications. However, USGS AEM survey visibility and data accessibility has not advanced as rapidly as our use of the technique. This data release catalogs AEM surveys in the United States that have contributed to studies under USGS programs including Water, Geologic Mapping, Minerals, Energy, Environmental Health, Ecosystems, Hazards, and Climate. This dataset contains locations for known and inventoried surveys, shows the footprints of the survey area, and summarizes basic survey specifications and publication status. It deviates from the national airborne geophysical survey inventory (https://mrdata.usgs.gov/airborne/): the AEM-specific data release catalogs completed and contracted AEM surveys including those that have not been published to date. This release also includes an indicator of activity status with the intent of improving utility and leading to regular updates; inactive (studies utilizing these data are complete), active (data are currently being used as part of on-going USGS research), and planned (acquisition is currently in progress at publication date).
This dataset documents the spatial footprint and survey details of airborne electromagnetic surveys in the United States conducted by or contributing to U.S. Geological Survey programs.

This release of the dataset was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Resources Program (MRP).
Dataset was peer reviewed and qualitatively examined.
No formal logical accuracy tests were conducted. Data were checked for duplication.
Data set is considered complete for the information presented, as described in the abstract. Users are advised to read the rest of the metadata record carefully for additional details.
No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted.
No formal positional accuracy tests were conducted.
SURVEY INVENTORY: Historically, surveys were inventoried via spreadsheet by contracting officials and scientists at the USGS Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center and its predecessor Science Center(s); Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center and Branch of Geophysics. The surveys had been inventoried by unique survey contract number tracking type of data collected, contractor conducting the survey, and other ancillary data associated with the survey. The contracts are business agreements between the USGS and a geophysical survey company following specific requirements for each airborne geophysical survey.
2006
COMPILING LOCATIONS OF SURVEYS: Footprints were developed showing the extent of the area surveyed. When footprint information was already available from the airborne geophysical inventory (https://mrdata.usgs.gov/airborne/) these data were used. If unavailable, footprints were developed by plotting the data and making a polygon envelope of the extent of the survey. At times footprints were digitized from georeferenced study area maps published with surveys.

DOCUMENTING AND CATEGORIZING SURVEYS: Links to published data were added to the data table with access to data primarily via USGS Publications Warehouse, USGS Mineral Resources Online Spatial Data: Airborne geophysical surveys, AK Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (DGGS): Airborne GeophysWeb, and USGS ScienceBase. Survey dates and flight details were documented and added to the dataset. Additional content was added to the datasets including survey status: planned, active, inactive.
