This line vector dataset represents initial groundwater head contours used as input data for the Rio Grande transboundary integrated hydrologic model and water-availability analysis, New Mexico and Texas, United States, and Northern Chihuahua, Mexico.
<purpose>This dataset was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey study, done in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, to be used as input data for the Rio Grande transboundary integrated hydrologic model and water-availability analysis, New Mexico and Texas, United States, and Northern Chihuahua, Mexico. The intended uses of this dataset include, but are not limited to, natural resource modeling, mapping, and visualization applications.</purpose>

<procdesc>A GIS was used to generate a composite set of groundwater head contours by compiling and editing spatial information from Conover (1954) and Wilson and others (1981). 1947 water-table contours for Doña Ana County from Conover (1954, plate 1) and January 1976 water-table contours for the Rincon Valley and adjacent areas from Wilson and others (1981, plate 5) were digitized separately and merged into a single dataset. Contours from these two sources were extended into regions of the Rio Grande Transboundary Integrated Hydrologic Model (RGTIHM) active area not covered by this merged dataset, and were connected where deemed appropriate.</procdesc>
