This Data Release contains geospatially-enabled geological data to accompany the Geologic Map of the Central Beaverhead Mountains, Lemhi County, Idaho, and Beaverhead County, Montana. This map portrays detailed geology of the central Beaverhead Mountains, printable at 1:50,000 scale. These data were collected between 1997 and 2017, and synthesized to provide significant new stratigraphic and structural data and interpretations. Generalized basin geology compiled from sources on both sides of the range is combined with newly mapped bedrock geology to better integrate geologic development of the map area.
<purpose>This geodatabase and associated files accompany the Geologic Map of the Central Beaverhead Mountains, Lemhi County, Idaho, and Beaverhead County, Montana. These data can be used to recreate the map, integrate with other geospatial geology data, or perform geospatial analysis. Although the map is appropriate for use at 1:24.000 scale, it is intended to be printed at 1:50,000 scale because of the large size of the study area. This Data Release conforms to the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program's (NCGMP) Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) version 2.0, with modifications as appropriate.</purpose>
<supplinf>This Data Release consists of these files and folders:
Geology_Beaverhead_Mts.gdb.zip (zipped file geodatabase)
Geology_Beaverhead_Mts.mxd (ArcMap file with relative data pathing)
Geology_Beaverhead_Mts-metadata.xml (FGDC metadata)
Geology_Beaverhead_Mts-resources.zip (zipped archive folder with resource files)
Geology_Beaverhead_Mts.style (ArcGIS style file)
FGDCGeoAge.otf (font for geologic unit labels)
FGDCGeoSym01_1.ttf (font for point symbols)
FGDCGeoSym02_1.ttf (font for point symbols)
FGDCGeoSym03_1.ttf (font for point symbols)
FGDCGeoSym04_1.ttf (font for point symbols)
FGDCGeoSym05_1.ttf (font for point symbols)
Geology_Beaverhead_Mts-shapefiles.zip (zipped archive folder with shapefiles (.shp) and tables (.csv) from geodatabase)
Beaverhead_thumbnail_photo.jpg (thumbnail image of perspective photo from sim3413)
sim3413_Beaverhead_Mts-thumbnail.jpg (thumbnail image of sim3413 map sheet)

The file geodatabase (Geology_Beaverhead_Mts.gdb) consists of one dataset with eight feature classes, and three tables:
GeologicMap (Dataset of geologic mapping feature classes)
CartographicLines (Lines of cross-section traces)
ContactsAndFaults (Lines of map boundaries, geologic unit contacts, and faults)
DataSourcePolys (Polygons of previous mapping sources)
OrientationPoints (Points of geologic feature orientation and attitude measurements)
GeologicLines (Lines of anticlines, synclines, and dikes)
MapUnitPolys (Polygons of geologic units)
OtherPolys (Polygons of areas containing breccia)
DataSources (Table of previous mapping reference information)
DescriptionOfMapUnits (Table of geologic unit labels, symbols, descriptions)
Glossary (Table describing terms used in type, confidence and lithology fields)

The ArcGIS style file (Geology_Beaverhead_Mts.style) contains symbology information for all feature classes except DataSourcePolys. To use the style file correctly, first install the included fonts on your computer according to the instructions for your operating system, and place the style file in a directory of your choice, or in the ArcGIS directory with the default styles. To see the symbols available in the style file, use the ArcMap Style Manager to add the style to the list of available styles. To apply the style to a feature class, use the 'Match to symbols in a style' option in the Symbology tab in the Layer Properties dialog, browse to the style file location, select Description as the Value Field, and click the Match Symbols button. This must be done for each feature class in the geodatabase.</supplinf>

<procdesc>Primary geological field mapping was conducted between 1997 and 2007. Field maps were then scanned at high resolution (300+ dpi). Resulting scans were deskewed, cropped into quarter-panels if necessary, and converted to indexed-color jpg files. Scans were then georegistered against the original historical topographic map that matches the given field map. Scans of field map backsides, which list sample site field ID's, were deskewed, cropped, flipped on the long edge, then georegistered against the rectified field map front. Geology data were digitized into polygon, line, and point features. Initial digitized feature classes were exported from 10.1 personal geodatabase to a 10.4 file geodatabase compliant with the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program Geologic Map Schema (GeMS). Mapping was field checked and augmented. GeMS geodatabase feature classes and tables were populated with necessary and relevant data. Cross-section line traces were determined. Cross-section data was extracted using GeMS cross-section tools in ArcGIS. Symbolization of geologic units, contacts and faults, point features, and cross-sections were determined and style file and layers created. Topology tests were conducted on polygon and line feature classes.</procdesc>

    <overview>
<eaover>The feature classes of this database (CartographicLines, ContactsAndFaults, DataSourcePolys, GeologicLines, MapUnitPolys, OrientationPoints, and OtherPolys) are contained in a feature dataset entitled GeologicMap. The feature classes can be symbolized by using the associated style file, according to the Description field. All classes can be symbolized this way except DataSourcePolys, which does not have any styles assigned. The style file also provides RGB values for area fill symbols, lists the dataset the symbol is associated with, and the FGDC code for the appropriate point and line symbol for the feature type (Federal Geographic Data Committee [prepared for the Federal Geographic Data Committee by the U.S. Geological Survey], 2006, FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization: Reston, Va., Federal Geographic Data Committee Document Number FGDC-STD-013-2006, U.S. Geological Survey Techniques and Methods 11-A2, 290 p., 2 plates. Available at https://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/2006/11A02/ ).</eaover>
