This dataset consists of a shapefile of points corresponding to water depth collected for the bathymetric survey of Puerto Mosquito, in Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico, on August 11, 2015. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board, conducted a limnological study at Puerto Mosquito in Vieques to assess the principal mechanisms affecting the hydrology and water quality characteristics. The study characterized hydrologic and physical-chemical properties, sediment deposition rates, bathymetry, and biological conditions. The bathymetric survey system used for the study consisted of coupling a global positioning system (GPS) device with a water depth sounder. Established navigation lines were used to simultaneously collect the water depth and geographic location data using a bathymetric system. A bathymetric map was generated by transferring collected data into a geographic information system (GIS).
<purpose>The purpose of the bathymetric survey is to determine water depth, which is necessary to contour the bottom of lagoon and calculate the water volume of the lagoon referenced to mean sea level. This dataset in shapefile format contains the generated water depth data points for Puerto Mosquito, in Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico, during the bathymetric survey conducted on August 11, 2015.</purpose>
<supplinf>Puerto Mosquito is one of the biggest lagoons (with a surface-area of 64 ha) on Isla de Vieques and a major tourist attractions mainly because of the presence of bioluminescent dinoflagellates within its waters. The U.S. Geological Survey, Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center (USGS, CFWSC) in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board (PREQB) conducted a study from July 2015 to July 2016 to establish baseline water-quality conditions at Puerto Mosquito at Isla de Vieques and Caño Boquerón at Cabo Rojo, Pueto Rico. In addition to the water-quality characterization, a bathymetric survey was conducted to determine the storage volume of both lagoons. Suggested citation: Gómez-Fragoso, J. M., and Santiago-Saez, J. <procdesc>The bathymetric survey was conducted using a bathymetric system and established navigation lines which are simultaneously collecting the lagoon water depth and geographic location data. The bathymetric survey system used for the study consisted of coupling a global positioning system (GPS) device with a water depth sounder. Calibration of the water depth sounder (fathometer) was conducted prior to the beginning of data collection using the check-bar method. Post-processing of the collected data (raw data) included the adjustment of water depth data in order to provide mean sea level referenced-points. A time/elevation correction is applied to each raw data point using water level data from USGS gaging station 50231500. The adjustment process was conducted using the bathymetric system software and involved: (1) comparing the time at which water depth (raw data) was collected (through the echo sounder device) and water level data at the gaging station (gage height record referenced to mean sea level); (2) assigning a negative/positive sign to water level at gaging station (thereafter named as tide correction) based on whether gage height is above or below mean sea level, and (3) adding this tide correction to the raw data.</procdesc>
